Monthly Barometer

It has been a huge privilege and pleasure to contribute to the Summit of Minds, last week, in Chamonix! Like the tectonic plates that once collided beneath the ancient ocean of Tethys, forming the towering peak of Mont Blanc 200 million years ago, we now find ourselves in a time of immense pressure... and possibility! We are standing on the edge of the cliff. Six out of nine planetary boundaries have already been breached, and global temperatures are on track to rise dangerously beyond 1.5°C, possibly reaching 2.8 to 2.9°C by the end of this century. The ground beneath us is literally shifting, and we must find new ways to generate deep resilience, adaptation, and antifragility. It is about rising stronger from the pressures we face and transform. As Einstein wrote, We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. Now, we must think the unthinkable. We must confront the unpalatable. We can’t let this polycrisis go to waste! Unleashing nonlinear, unorthodox thinking and action is not without its challenges, but it’s exactly what is needed in this moment. It requires us to break free from traditional solutions and maladaptive policies and frameworks that no longer serve us. This kind of thinking pushes us into new territory where creativity and collaboration become essential tools—not just nice-to-haves, but must-haves. It requires embracing uncertainty, disruption, and even discomfort. To do this, we need transformative alliances—new partnerships that must mirror the powerful forces beneath the Earth's surface, driving forward systemic change and creating a sustainable future that benefits people, planet, and prosperity. I am deeply grateful to the founders of the Summit of Minds, Thierry Malleret, and Mary Anne Malleret-Broom-Smith for their vision in creating this unique space. Most importantly, warm thanks to my fellow participants, and panelists! I found your insights and our interactions extraordinarily fertile. And just like that, the Summit of Minds 10th edition has come to a close in gorgeous #Chamonix, France. I am so grateful to be a part of such a dynamic, brilliant, and diverse community. The days are long, the conversations are dense, and the desire to effect change is palpable. Some highlights from today's dialogues were: ✅ If you want to try and make sense of the world, it's always a good idea to start by remembering that what is considered "The West" only represents about 15% of the global population. The other 85% have different points of view on topics, and it is important that you seek those opinions out in order to have a better-balanced take on a subject. It's not always comfortable but we're adults, we can handle it. ✅ Generally speaking, Democracy outperforms Authoritarianism in the long run. Of course, there are different levels of Authoritarianism, and there are examples of those that have generated economic success, but often, they go backward, which is not a good thing. ✅ There is still a lot of uncertainty in today's markets. Though progress has been made on lowering inflation, we don't know when, and how far interest rate cuts will happen. The focus on politics impacting the economy is a little overblown as it just creates noise. There are bigger issues to keep an eye on such as liquidity in NBFI (Non-bank financial institutions) like hedge funds. As Sam Zell said, "You have no value if you have no liquidity." ✅ A study by GFI, Oxford, and others says that "Nature degradation could cause a 12% loss to UK GDP," which is significant. The importance of keeping a focus on fixing climate change is critical. Youth in Mexico City are saying "We aren't interested in your opinion, we want you to lead by example." AI is just the warm-up to what is coming. There is enormous opportunity and uncertainty around the impact AI will have on the world. We have to take calculated risks and do things differently. All in all, the sentiment was muted. There are lots of challenges out there, and in Europe, the war in Ukraine is probably issue #1, and it is soaking up a lot of time and resources that could be focused productively elsewhere.

Summit of Minds 2024 – An Amazing 10th Edition! 🎉 A massive thank you to Thierry Malleret and Mary Anne Malleret-Broom-Smith, the entire team, incredible speakers, and all the participants for making this September’s edition such a success. As a Public Affairs intern focused on EU policy, I was particularly captivated by the session analysing the current state of Europe. Here are some key takeaways that resonated with me: 🔹 Internal and External Challenges: The EU is facing growing nationalism internally and increased competition from China and the US externally. These pressures demand a new vision for Europe’s future. Key elements of this vision include: - Boosting public investment in strategic areas - Addressing Europe’s aging workforce with sustainable solutions - Strengthening the security & defence industry - Most importantly, staying united in the face of adversity 🔹 Opportunity for Change: Europe is at a pivotal moment. To remain competitive, EU governments need to think long-term and act more European. This includes prioritising uniform standardisation over national interpretations of regulations. Additionally, with enlargement on the horizon, it’s clear that the EU’s governance structure must evolve to accommodate its growing membership. 🔹 Global Context: Our speakers (Catriona Oliphant, Laurent Cohen-Tanugi, Michael Moller, and Jutta Paulus) underscored the importance of facing Europe's challenges head-on. They highlighted key developments such as: - The Green Industrial Deal announced by Ursula Von der Leyen - Navigating the rise of an increasingly powerful China and the influence of an invasive Russia - Tackling migration and demographic issues to secure a future-ready workforce We were reminded to keep a close watch on the US presidential election and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, as both will undoubtedly shape Europe's trajectory. So many more insights were shared during the sessions — there’s far too much to cover in a single post! I’m already looking forward to (hopefully!) next year’s edition to continue learning from such an inspiring group of participants, speakers, and organisers. Already the second day at the Summit of Minds, an incredible gathering of brilliant minds on essential topics. A big thank you to Mary Anne Malleret-Broom-Smith and Thierry Malleret for this enriching experience! Here are a few key takeaways from a few sessions so far: - Negotiation through movement: Nicholas C. Niggli shared the power of walking during negotiations — how being in motion can help unlock more dynamic and productive discussions. - A world in transformation: Kishore Mahbubani highlighted that two of the three largest democracies are outside the West, reminding us of the growing influence of multiculturalism, multipolarity, and multilateralism — perhaps the ‘3 M’s’ for a more inclusive global future? - What’s next for Russia? With insights from Julian Mueller-Kaler, John Lough and Elena Daly, we explored possible future scenarios for Russia. While there’s hope, the coming weeks will be crucial for shaping its path forward. And some book presentations: - the Connections World - The future of Asian Capitalism, Simon Commander - Death at Davos, Thierry Malleret I really recommend you to read them !
