Last weekend we were proud sponsors of the European Defense Tech hackathon at STATION F, Paris. 170 people & 34 teams worked on some of the most important problems in defense. The energy was exceptional, and we hope to collaborate with many of the individuals in future. Congrats to Florian Corgnou, Gregor Lenz, Karl Vetter, Filipp Trigub, Kai Dierenbach, Shannah Santucci, Enrique Munoz de Cote & Patrick for winning! Their project detected and tracked UAVs across difficult light conditions. The competition was fierce though, and the strong runners up included: 2nd place: "Magnetic Navigation for Submarine drones" by Hugo Biais, Axel Nguyen--Kerbel, Stefan AGRICI, David Podolskyi & Yoan Di Cosmo 3rd place: "Anti-Helicopter Mine" by Antoine Besset and Adhémar de Senneville. Last, thanks to Benjamin Wolba, Jonatan H. Luther-Bergquist and Cyrus Hessabi for organising. Bullish on the future of European defence! I had a really great time at the Neuromorphic Hackathon organized by fortiss and neuroTUM, where I connected with the bright young minds working on the future of neuromorphic computing! 🧠 The hackathon featured four projects that participating students could choose to work on. As an invited speaker, I organized a topic on spacecraft pose estimation using event-based cameras, together with Arunkumar Rathinam from the University of Luxembourg. The high dynamic range of event cameras can help make the estimations more reliable under challenging lighting conditions, plus there is evidence that the domain gap between simulated and real data is smaller for event camera data compared to RGB camera data, which is crucial for space applications. 💡 I'm really proud of the students Roua Brini, Manoj Bhat, Jost Reelsen and Jakub Skupien who not only did an outstanding job of developing a working solution within 5 days, they also won the award for the best project of the hackathon! 🏆 Special thanks to Jules Lecomte and Axel von Arnim for the support and warm welcome, you've got a great team there! 🚀 This marks the beginning of a new era for next-generation computing, especially in Europe. As Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs of #France, stated at the launch of the new stream of the Creative Destruction Lab, “This union between France and Germany, through this program, presents an opportunity to develop European sovereignty in new technologies.” Last week, teams from CDL-Berlin and CDL-Paris gathered in #Germany for our first in-person session with ventures and mentors. This new stream, supported by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation in collaboration with TUM Campus Heilbronn and Campus Founders, strengthens the partnership between France and Germany. It also underscores the critical need for greater #European synergy in investments and streamlined regulations to foster a more innovative and competitive market in emerging technologies, as highlighted as well by President Emmanuel Macron during his speech last week at ESMT Berlin, during the Berlin Global Dialogue. 💥 Minister Barrot emphasized, “We need pan-European investment funds that will increase the size of VC funds.” This approach will enhance Europe’s strategic independence, particularly in disruptive technologies like quantum computing. Carlo Sirtori, one of our program mentors, added, “There’s no longer a possibility to have a computer for everything; we need specific CPUs tailored to the demands of applications and the type of computation.” 👏 Congratulations to all the startups and the incredible solutions they presented. The ventures also had the unique opportunity to share lunch with the minister, presenting the contexts they operate in and the challenges and opportunities they face. As the minister noted, “We also need to resort to public money for industrial policy, especially for hardware.” Stay tuned to HEC Paris and HEC Paris - Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute pages, and that of our partners at DEEP - Institute for Deep Tech Innovation! We’ll be publishing an article soon with all the highlights from this first session! 🌍💡 Thank you to the Ambassade de France en Allemagne for their invaluable support and encouragement of this Franco-German cooperation. #BuildSomethingMassive #NextGenComputing #Quantum #MakeitHappen #MakeitBIG #LearnToDare Inge Kerkloh-Devif Aymeric Penven Dr. Thorsten Lambertus Francis de Véricourt Thiago Penteado Ajay Agrawal Sonia Sennik Ignacio Gimenez Losano Flora CABOT Johannes Schnabel Sebastian D Becker Maxime Borrel, MBA Livia Kalossaka Nicole Pereira Patrick Kappel Rintaro Arai Carlos Serrano Peter Mathias Fischer Jiseon Bak Clémentine Decoopman Erfane Arwani Florian Corgnou
