The UK’s Top Startups employ mostly men, according to analysis of LinkedIn data. Women occupy just 39.9% of roles at LinkedIn’s Top 20 Startups in the UK, while men account for the remaining 60.1% of positions. Top Startups in Manchester have a better gender diversity than those in London, with 50.8% of roles occupied by women versus 40.1% of roles in London. On a global level, the UK ranked 10th when it came to gender diversity across Top Startups, with startups in countries such as Italy, the US and Australia all employing a higher percentage of women. The gender imbalance is even more stark at the leadership level and the vast majority of Top Startup founders are male. Claire Nouet, co-founder and COO at female-led software startup Pathway, told LinkedIn News that systemic barriers exist in the startup ecosystem in the UK and beyond that need to be actively challenged. “This involves fostering specific opportunities for female-identifying entrepreneurs, celebrating their achievements and supporting their growth,” she said. “We need to hold up the work of pioneering women, so we can not only inspire future generations of female leaders but also break down some of the wider societal misconceptions that present barriers to their success. Dismantling outdated, ingrained gender biases will spur an evolution of the startup landscape to a space where everyone has a fair chance of succeeding." Companies across the UK have a slightly higher percentage of women in their ranks than startups, with 40.5% of roles across all UK companies occupied by women. When it comes to age, the average age of a person at a Top Startup in the UK is 35-years-old. Meanwhile, France and Ireland have the highest average age, at 45 and 40 respectively.
