September is #NationalSuicidePreventionMonth—a time to raise awareness, honor the lives lost to suicide, and empower everyone to make a difference. This #WellbeingWednesday, we’re focusing on actionable steps you can take to support mental well-being, raise awareness, and help prevent suicide. Your involvement, no matter how small, can make a meaningful impact.
1️⃣ Keep Informed and Share Resources: Knowledge is power. By familiarizing yourself with the resources available, you can not only raise awareness but also potentially save lives by sharing crucial information.Learn about the warning signs and risk factors for suicide, and share trusted resources that could help others. Use digital shareables from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) or the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to spread awareness on social media.
2️⃣ Advocate for Mental Health Awareness: Advocacy starts with participation. Whether it’s through education or engaging in meaningful conversations, advocating for mental health awareness is a powerful way to break the stigma and support those in need. Attend webinars, Twitter chats, and Facebook Live sessions related to suicide prevention. Engage in discussions and explore online support communities like TrevorSpace for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, or participate in local events organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention.
3️⃣ Check-In and Follow-Up with Loved Ones: A simple conversation can make all the difference. Reaching out and following up shows others that they are not alone, reducing feelings of isolation and potentially preventing a crisis. Regularly check in with friends, family, and colleagues who may be struggling. Don’t be afraid to ask them how they’re feeling—directly asking about suicide can open the door to providing support. Follow up after the initial conversation to show continued care and concern.
Remember that every action counts. Whether you’re sharing resources, checking in on a friend, or advocating for mental health, your efforts contribute to a larger movement of support, empathy, and hope. Together, we can make a difference in preventing suicide and promoting mental well-being.
