We've been busy prepping for our Small Islands Meet-up 2024! 🏝 This year's event takes place in the Frioul islands and Marseille, from 13 to 18 October. Organised by SMILO, it brings together its community - a global network of stakeholders committed to the preservation and sustainable development of small islands. NGOs, protected area managers, local authorities and insular organisations, will all unite around a common vision. More than 130 participants, representing over 40 islands and from 25 countries, will gather for technical workshops, field visits and a rich exchange of ideas. This event will provide an opportunity for SMILO friends to assess the progress made, consolidate efforts and strengthen the partnerships needed to create sustainable and resilient islands that play a key role in preserving the environment on a global scale. Keep an eye out on our social networks next week and stay tuned for exciting upcoming content! 🙌 Thank you for your valuable support: Fonds français pour l'environnement mondial (FFEM) I AFD - Agence Française de Développement I Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco I Conservatoire du littoral I Ville de Marseille I Erasmus Plus I Initiative Pelagos I Blue I Ministère de la Transition Ecologie et de la Cohésion des Territoires I Région Sud - Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur I REMEDIES

À propos
SMILO is an international NGO that aims to support islands of less than 150km² towards a sustainable management of their territory and resources. Our integrated approach ensures that islands are more resilient to climate change, through our work on priority sectoral areas: waste management, energy, water and sanitation, biodiversity and ecosystems, landscapes and cultural heritage. Our program is built around a labelling process, which provides pragmatic and effective solutions for the benefit of local populations and international recognition for sustainable islands. We support small islands in the Mediterranean, Western Africa and Indian Ocean in defining a sustainable vision for their territory and implementing sustainable practices. Our approach highlights the importance of building strategies based on concertation among local actors, as well as on capitalization through South-South and North-South cooperation. We are also involved in advocacy operations to bring islands conservation to the international agenda (IUCN 2020, CBD Post-2020).

We recently got back from beautiful Formentera, an 83 km2 Balearic Island that counts around 10 000 inhabitants. We had the opportunity to meet key environmental players and share best practices. We discovered the Casbah hotel's initiative, that has established many hectares around it to produce organic fruits and vegetables for its restaurant. 🍑 🫒 Since May 2024, the Casbah’s hotel crew have been testing a composting machine to create compost from the hotel's organic waste, which they reuse for its orchard. Another interesting project the island has in the works is “Save the Posidonia” monitoring system - to reduce the number of boats anchoring, they deal with paparazzi to report VIP boats, collaborate with boat captains to instruct them to anchor in the clear zone of the sea, and have patrols track anchors using a low-cost system of shallow sandy seabed observation. ⚓ Thanks to Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco for helping us pursue our exchanges with other island territories, particularly on the issues of marine space planning and impact reduction on Posidonia, as well as challenges of sustainable tourism and the circular economy. How about rediscovering Gorée in a new light? Last week saw the inauguration of the island's new nature and cultural trails - designed to enhance local biodiversity and offer an immersive walk through the island's ecological and heritage wonders. The project, carried out in partnership with the Conservatoire du littoral and local stakeholders, beautifully combines art and nature. 🌿✨ Visiting Gorée is part of SMILO's labeling process with a series of actions already carried out and an opportunity to exchange with the island of Bassar, in order to reinforce their joint commitment to sustainable development. Well done team! 👏 With the support of AFD - Agence Française de Développement | Fonds français pour l'environnement mondial (FFEM) | Commune de l'île de Gorée
