Let’s talk Carbon Footprint. 👣 It's important to our partners and it's important to us. Swan’s services are purely digital, with no physical bank branches, so we make less emissions from buildings and facilities than other types of businesses. But we can’t deny that our day-to-day operations still contribute to climate change. Because Swan develops banking features that power software across Europe, our services are far-reaching. This makes it especially important to take sustainability seriously. That's why we partnered with Magelan to measure, report, and reduce our carbon footprint in line with industry standards. Discover Swan's Carbon Footprint 2023 and the concrete actions we're implementing to improve. Click through the carousel or dive deeper on our blog! https://lnkd.in/eVnjRhmQ

Here at Swan, we're proud to be part of the EU payments & banking system, where vigilant regulators help keep us running smoothly and securely. Our CEO just shared his thoughts on the recent BaaS 'happening' in the US. Take a look for a European perspective!

With the Synapse/Evolve fiasco in the US… is BaaS dead? 🤔 Think about Boeing’s troubles—did that stop you from flying? 🛫 Imagine your bank becomes unreliable: payments fail, your money is locked, you’re unsure if you’ll get it back. A nightmare, right? This happened to nearly 100,000 Americans, involving $265 million in deposits. 💸 The culprits? Two behind-the-scenes providers of neobanks: Evolve, a fintech-friendly bank, and Synapse, a Banking-as-a-Service platform. Yes, a BaaS platform. Like Swan. Does this mean the model is riskier than traditional banking? Where did Synapse and Evolve go wrong? Unlike Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse, this wasn’t caused by a bank run. Here’s what I understood of the situation (speaking from an EU perspective, so correct me if I’m wrong!) Synapse built and manages accounts for neobanks like Yotta, Copper or Juno, but all funds are pooled into their own FBO (for benefit of ) account at Evolve. It’s a matter of safety. The total balance on all of the accounts’ ledgers must match the money stored at Evolve— a key safeguarding principle. This requires Reconciliation—comparing records to ensure they align. Simple in theory, tough in practice. Requiring precision, automation, expertise, and sometimes manual intervention. This system is well-known to European e-money institutions but Ledgers and Reconciliation are the backbone of any banking system. Still, there was a $40m shortfall in Evolve's accounts compared to the entries at Synapse. No hacker seems to be involved; the issue appears to be operational. So who’s responsible—Synapse or Evolve? For now, we're waiting for trial results to better understand what happened. Other industries manage high-risk services. Energy. Transportation. When you manufacture airplanes, your top priority is keeping them in the air: lives are on the line! 🛩 Banking may not be life-threatening, but the responsibility is just as crucial. Clients trust you with their money. They need access to it. No excuses. Could this kind of fiasco happen to Swan? I don’t think so. But, hey, it’s important to keep things in check and not get overconfident. We’re built on a culture of quality and long-term planning, just like any traditional bank. Our ledger and payment systems operate the same way, and our services are the same—they're just delivered differently. Instead of a Swan app, you access our banking through other companies. It’s indirect. “White-label.” Still, we also provide a direct interface for end customers, giving real-time access to their accounts.🛡️ It’s surprising U.S. regulators didn’t catch the Synapse/Evolve mess. The European model, with its e-money licenses, is stronger. At Swan, Safeguarding happens in real-time. We, ourselves, are regulated. And the local regulators are especially vigilant. If just one cent goes missing, alarms go off. 🚨 So, is this the end of BaaS platforms? Hardly. Think of Boeing's troubles—are they enough to make you stop flying?

E-invoicing is a hot topic every software company should be on top of. ⚡️ ️ Thanks to sweeping regulatory changes and initiatives across Europe — like FacturaE in Spain, FatturaPA in Italy, and UBL-OHNL in the Netherlands —businesses are being required to accept and issue electronic invoices. The push to make e-invoicing mandatory is in full swing and gaining momentum. So why the push? It was needed. E-invoicing makes it easier to pay and get paid, yet it's not as ubiquitous as you might think. Only 20% of invoices issued in France were digital as of 2020 (Les Echos). But that’s changing fast. Leaders in financial management are already embracing the movement by embedding invoice payments directly into their products. Think Qonto, Libéo, Pennylane, Sage… It's a prime example of how regulatory changes can spark innovation amongst software companies. New opportunities are uncovered across all kinds of sectors like accounting, purchasing, billing, HR, B2B neobanks, and more! At Swan, we make it easy to seize this opportunity and build a complete, automated invoicing system. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eGWmbppW
