This week we attended the Space Power Workshop, organized by The Aerospace Corporation, in Torrance, California. Bringing together aerospace leaders from across the globe, the event’s objective was to discuss rapid and agile power systems and developing new norms for an evolving and contested space environment. Two of our colleagues hosted conferences during the event. Dr. Torsten Torunski, Senior Product Manager at AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH focused on #EnergyGeneration, while Jason Merrell, Ph.D., Director of Engineering and Technology Development at 5N+ Semiconductors LLC, addressed #Critical Ge Supply Chain. They were joined by Gervais Jacques, President and CEO of 5N+, Richard Perron, MSc MBA CPA (US), Chief Financial Officer of 5N+, and Roland Dubois, EVP, Specialty Semiconductors of 5N+. One thing that stood out to me was how essential system architecture and data integrity are when dealing with complex, mission-critical applications. Whether launching satellites or analyzing data from space missions, the challenges were monumental—but so were the opportunities to innovate. One key takeaway from my time there was the importance of scalability and resilience in technological solutions. In space, there is no room for error, which means that everything from software systems to data management protocols must be meticulously designed to handle the unexpected. Developing robust systems that can operate seamlessly under extreme conditions not only pushes the boundaries of engineering but also redefines what’s possible in technology. The intersection of artificial intelligence, advanced simulations, and data analytics plays a crucial role in space exploration. These technologies are now more relevant than ever as we aim to optimize decision-making processes, automate complex tasks, and enhance the capabilities of systems deployed in space. It’s been fascinating to see how innovations in aerospace trickle down to other industries, inspiring new approaches to solve earthbound challenges.
