Could this be the beginning of the CARPOOLING REVOLUTION? Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) is preparing an international tender to select the operator of 12 carpooling routes to be rolled-out across the Region early next year. These routes, subsidized by IDFM and featuring fixed stops and reserved lanes in designated areas, are designed to become a competitive transport alternative in low-density areas where scheduled public transport might not be the most efficient option. Carpooling is set to become a transport mode in its own right, and France is leading the way. In theory, increasing the occupancy rate will proportionally decrease the number of private cars on the road. Will the math hold in the real world? https://lnkd.in/dF-3qn_F

[Why do we need optimization] 7) Optimization in Public Transport Public transport systems are essential for our daily life and activities. In a city like Paris for example, they provide the possibility to transport millions of people from their homes to their work using a huge network of shared #infrastructure (roads, rails, etc.). Have we ever taken a moment to think about the multiple #operational #challenges that lie behind the simple act of taking the bus or the metro line every morning? Let's take a look at some of these issues to which optimization is the key for keeping public transport systems on track: ✔ How to design your transportation network? How to fix stops in a way that maximizes accessibility and ridership? ✔ How to define schedules for different transport lines? (e.g. at what frequency should the bus circulate during which time shift?) ✔ How to match available human resources with transport system needs and how to plan their working days/hours? (e.g. drivers, controllers, cleaning services, etc.) ✔ How to manage schedules in the presence of unexpected events? (e.g. accidents, delays, traffic jam, etc.) ✔ How to deal with the design of zone tarif systems, where fares are determined by the number of zones used by passengers, transportation costs, and passenger demands? ✔ How to synchronize different modes of transportation in order to enhance service and maximize passenger satisfaction? (e.g. synchronizing train arrivals with bus departures) This is just a glimpse on how optimization and operations research can be used in planning public transport systems, many other issues can also be considered ! Nigeria: Lagos State wants to acquire 2,050 buses for public transport The bus acquisition project for the State of Lagos aims to increase the public transport offer and reduce the influence of private operators, which are dominant in this market. The Government of the State of Lagos has reported an ongoing plan to acquire 2,050 buses to facilitate transport in the city and its suburbs. According to Oluwaseun Osiyemin, State Transport Commissioner, the project carried out with private investors is almost in its finalization phase. "We have almost completed the purchase of 2,000 BHNS buses to reduce queues in stations. An oil company provides us with 50 electric buses in addition to those that the state government is buying, "he said. The project is unveiled following an announcement made last week by the Governor of the State of Lagos regarding a 25% reduction in the rates of public bus transport services and other transport networks operated by the administration of that state. The decision at the same time triggered a high attendance at all bus terminals in Lagos State. The plan, if successful, will complete the public transport offer in this city, which is currently the most populated on the continent. In addition to bus transport, the government is developing an urban train network called Lagos Rail Mass Transit, consisting of 7 lines in total to link the different districts of Lagos and its peripheries. The Blue Line, the first section of this network, has been operational since last September as the authorities prepare to inaugurate the second section called Red Line. A very good handbook provided by Cerema. Marc Lusignan, do you remember we were investigating how to use the potential of highways to create a more efficient public transit network for Réseau de transport de la Capitale. As I often share many times, Greeter Helsinki Area is a good example on how they use highways network for their HSL Helsingin seudun liikenne buses. As an example, let's have a look at Länsiväylä highway and how buse stations are. 🚏 😉 For sure, Valérie Racine, Michel de Mauraige, Isabelle Huard, this document is relevant for you, especially in the context of MaaS and interoperability.

"Nearly one in 4 buses runs on gas in France As of 1 January 2023, the national fleet of 27,826 buses (to be differentiated from coaches, which provide connections between cities) is mainly made up of five energy sectors: Diesel fuel: * 65.3%, but continuing to lose momentum (-5% between 2002 and 2023), * natural gas and natural gas-electric hybrids (18% of the fleet), * the "diesel-electric" hybrid (9%, stable), * electricity (7%, +2%) * hydrogen (the deployment of which remains very marginal (0.1% of the fleet))." This is great.....will be even better when the AD plants that make the biomethane capture their Bio-CO2 and then riding in 18% of the buses in France will be helping to remove dinosaur era CO2 from the air CNG Fuels CNG Services Limited

Great news for meeting lower #IMO GHG and #Fueleu , however Dover and Calais presently do not have onshore power #ops to allow for connection of vessels hotel loads, let alone charging at 40MVA for charging the battery energy storage system (BESS) . I would expect the ships to initially operate in hybrid electric mode, same as P&O Pioneer and Liberte do currently. Lead times for grid connections are also very long and would require significant infrastructure at both ports ....hope they have a solution planned for the arrival of the 2 new #dfds vessels in 2025 & 2026! The 2 new #pof hybrid electric ferries currently operating on the route are also unable to connect at the ports of #Dover or #Calais and are awaiting high voltage #OPS connections to be available to be able to be modified to operate fully electric as well.
