“People aren’t disabled, access is disabled — by buildings that don’t properly meet the needs of users,” said P&G Global Architect Frederik Spittael. At P&G, we believe all employees, with their unique talents and lived experiences, should have the opportunity to succeed, develop and grow — and in turn, inspire growth for our business through accessible innovation in our products, services and communications. That’s why we’re going beyond basic accessibility design and code compliance checklists to make P&G workspaces more equitable by applying Universal Design principles to create environments that are usable by all, without the need for adaptation. While working at one of my last companies, I had a silent disagreement with a coworker about the temperature of the AC. Seemed extremely petty to everyone else back then!! Nineteen degrees Celsius is an abominable setting for air conditioning, although it may not feel uncomfortable for the male body, as I learned later. Now, I work for a workspace design firm, and on my second day at the office, I came across a book called Gender, Space, and Architecture by Jane Rendell. Here’s what I learned: Rendell discusses how gendered spaces in architecture reflect and reinforce social norms. She argues that traditional architectural practices often overlook women's experiences and needs, resulting in spaces that can be exclusionary or oppressive. She emphasizes the importance of understanding how spatial design influences gender relations and advocates for a more inclusive approach that considers diverse perspectives. This discussion of gendered spaces connects to office AC temperatures through the lens of comfort and inclusion. Research shows that traditional office climate control often prioritizes male metabolic rates, leading to environments that can be uncomfortably cold for many women. This issue reflects a broader problem: spaces are often designed with a specific demographic in mind, ignoring the needs of others. Rendell’s ideas help us see how environmental factors, like temperature, can reinforce feelings of exclusion or discomfort in the workplace. A more equitable approach to office design would take diverse comfort levels into account and challenge the norms that dictate these conditions, promoting a more inclusive atmosphere that accommodates everyone. At our current office space, there are areas with varying temperatures, allowing people to choose workstations that suit their comfort levels. This thoughtful design promotes a more inclusive environment where individuals can select spaces that help them feel productive and at ease, whether they prefer cooler zones for focus or warmer areas for collaboration. One more revelation: everything around you is often designed with the male presence and body in mind. Don’t be afraid to challenge that! #workspacedesign #workspacevibe #employeeexperience #workvibes #architecturaldesign #design #workplacedesign #backtooffice #gender
