Dubai Looking Into Innovative Mass Transit Solutions Dubai is exploring innovative transportation solutions like a driverless smart-train and a solar-powered rail bus system for its mass transit network, as announced during the Dubai International Project Management Forum. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) with international companies to advance these initiatives.

TRAMWAY FOR TUNISIA'S SECOND CITY The Sfax Light Rail is a tramway system that the Ministry of Transport in Tunisia will develop in the Sfax Governorate. The project aims to address the growing transportation needs in Tunisia’s second-largest city. The tramway project has two lines. Line T1 runs 22.8 km from Sfax–Thyna International Airport to El Ons, with 38 stations, while T2 covers 10.7 km between the city centre and Gremda Road, with 18 stations. ' The project will be implemented in four phases: Phase 1 covers the construction of 13.5 km of line T1 from Taniour to Soukra and Airport Road. Phase 2 covers the construction of 7.8 km of line T2 between the city centre and Gremda Road. Phase 3 will complete line T1 by extending it to El Ons suburb in the north (9.3 km). Phase 4 will complete line T2 (2.9 km). The planned Sfax transport network includes three bus rapid transit (BRT) lanes and two tramway lines. Consultants- The French firm Egis and local firm I2E conducted a feasibility study for the transport network between 2011 and 2013. SYSTRA and local consultancy firm STUDI International conducted preliminary and detailed design studies for the project's line T1. Both studies were funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB). CONTRACT AWARD FOR BAGHDAD METRO PROJECT IMMINENT - Designs for the $2.5bn Baghdad Metro have been completed. Iraq plans to build a railway network in the capital, Baghdad, as part of its post-war reconstruction plans. According to Nasser Al Asadi, the prime minister’s adviser on transport affairs, the system will eventually cover 148km. Its 64 stations will bring mass transit to 85% of the city’s 8 million inhabitants and link up all its holy sites, colleges, and tourism districts. Haider Makiya, the chair of the National Investment Commission (NIC), announced in early February that his organisation had begun accepting bids for the much-delayed project. The agreement includes the supply of rolling stock, electromechanical systems, tracks, and associated civil works. So far, 26 bidders based in China, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Qatar have emerged. The planned network may also be extended to link the capital city with other Iraqi governorates. Several global firms and consortia are also bidding for another project involving constructing a rail line linking the central Najaf and Karbala cities. THE PROJECT- Iraq's first elevated metro project includes the construction of 64 train stations and will have the capacity to transport nearly 5 million passengers daily. The project will cover more than 85% of Baghdad's capital and run at least 148 km, covering all residential areas and critical facilities, including Baghdad International Airport. The train will be automated, and its transport capacity will be among the highest in the world relative to the population. Alstom estimates that a journey on the metro from Allawi to al-Shaab, which currently takes 2 to 3 hours during rush hour, could take just 23 minutes. The rail line between the two central Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala will be around 80 km. MORE TO FOLLOW..... VM: Long-term infrastructure assessment for the Stuttgart railway hub On behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport (VM), SMA has successfully completed the study on infrastructure requirements in the core area of the major Stuttgart hub after a project that lasted more than two years. The result is a development concept that will make the 2040 Stuttgart hub ready for the implementation of the state of Baden-Württemberg's transport transformation goals. In an iterative process between service planning and traffic forecasts (carried out by a partner), a clear recommendation was made in favour of pursuing a T-shaped network between Stuttgart-Feuerbach and Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. Even with further increases in train numbers or during disruptions, neither the service concept nor the traffic forecasts showed that adding an additional station was preferable to this concept. The analyses also showed that in the future, with short train headway times in the digitalised Stuttgart hub and the corresponding rolling stock, the potential bottleneck with mixed traffic and at-grade junctions would be on the approaches to the area, and not in the core area itself.
