Are you considering signing up to be a Chartered Director? The Chartered Director qualification is an experience-based assessment. It requires you to display how you work within the context of your board, how you use your knowledge and skills to the benefit of the organisation and how you discharge your duties as a director. It recognises the high standards and capabilities that are needed for ensuring that the profession of ‘director’ is understood and placed at the heart of organisational life. On Monday 4 November, the IoD Guernsey and the GTA University Centre will carry out a short presentation about the qualification, before giving you the opportunity to speak with local Chartered Directors to find out more. You can find more about the presentation here: https://lnkd.in/givxn5-h #IoDGuernsey

The Institute of Directors (IoD) Guernsey branch is pleased to announce its forthcoming November breakfast, taking place on Friday 22 November. The event will be led by strategic communications expert Megan Pantelides, Executive Director of Research at Board Intelligence, and will focus on how directors can enhance their contributions to their board. During this session, Megan will explore what it takes to be a director and how board members can add value to both their own work and that of their fellow directors through effective board conversations. Drawing on over 15 years of experience working with boards and leadership teams, the session will introduce ‘collective intelligence’ and how it can be leveraged to benefit organisations. Megan’s background includes strategy consulting and executive search before joining Board Intelligence in 2018. Since then, she has helped shape the company’s thought leadership and led client engagement with the Private Equity and Trust & Corporate Services sectors. This breakfast session promises to be an invaluable learning experience for directors and board members looking to sharpen their leadership skills and improve board dynamics.   Thank you to our breakfast sponsor Skipton International for supporting this event. In celebration of World Mentorship Day Sarah Lacey, a member of the Next Gen Committee, discusses the Next Gen Forum's approach to mentorship and career growth. When the Next Gen Forum launched in late 2022, its primary goals were to help future directors reach their potential by expanding their networks, offering industry insights, and building their skills. To maximise learning opportunities, the Forum created a mentorship scheme connecting the next generation with well-established directors. Mentorship facilitates the long-term development of individuals in both mentor and mentee roles. Experienced directors provide guidance, support, and advice, empowering mentees to overcome challenges and excel in their careers. Mentors can also gain new skills and perspectives from their mentees' insights. You can find the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ew84-aRS #IoDGuernsey

The IoD in Guernsey has opened its second economic confidence survey to gather data on business sentiment in the Bailiwick. Results from the first edition, launched earlier this year in June, revealed that business leaders felt confident in their own organisation’s prospects over the next 12 months, despite revealing a negative sentiment towards the island’s overall economic outlook.  The Committee for Economic Development responded directly to the results of the first survey, and the results were taken into consideration by the States of Guernsey Data and Analysis Service when putting together the island’s 2024 GDP forecast. The responses also informed the IoD’s response to island policy matters. The second survey will start to build a picture of trends and the impact of changing local and international factors on businesses in the Bailiwick. Questions cover expectations for revenue, costs, profits, headcount and investment over the next 12 months and a list of the top five challenges affecting their business.  The survey will be open to IoD members until Monday 4th November. Richard Hemans, IoD Guernsey’s lead on economics, has shared his thoughts on the latest Guernsey Quarterly Inflation Bulletin, which revealed that local inflation continues to decline. ‘The latest bulletin shows that local inflation continues to decline slowly, but it is persistent and is now higher than both the UK and Jersey (based on the latter’s most recent figure at the end of June 2024). Guernsey’s inflation did not reach the levels experienced by the UK and Jersey during the pandemic, but it is proving to be more stubborn in coming down and is more elevated in relation to our nearest neighbours and pre-pandemic levels. The annual change in Guernsey’s RPI for the year was 5.1%, which was 1.9% lower than in September 2023 and 0.2% below June 2024.   ‘UK inflation is currently being driven by petrol and travel costs, whilst in Guernsey and also Jersey it is being driven by housing costs, reflecting the imbalance of supply and demand for this critical asset. Indeed, housing contributed over a third of inflation over the last year as there were significant increases in the cost of mortgages, rents and insurance.’ You can read Richard's full comments here: https://lnkd.in/eqcRF6rj #IoDGuernsey

The IoD Next Gen Forum would like to thank everyone who attended last week's workshop; Navigating Politics in Guernsey for Future Leaders. The session highlighted the importance of diversity in decision-making, drawing a parallel between diverse boards and the States of Deliberation. Guernsey is not unique in its challenges to achieving a demographically diverse government but as a community, we have the ability to address these issues. You can find out about upcoming Next Gen Forum events on the IoD Guernsey website. #IoDGuernsey #NextGenForum
