'This is a landmark moment,' says Kirsteen Newman, senior manager for dispensing and accredited training at Specsavers. Kirsteen chaired the trailblazer group that played a key role in developing the new dispensing optician apprenticeship, and stated that it opens up dispensing optician careers to more people, helping meet the profession’s workforce challenge, which will benefit patients 👏

It's crucial that music lovers protect their hearing 👂 Repeated exposure to high decibel levels can lead to permanent damage, such as sound-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. We're proud to work in partnership with the Night Time Industries Association and see the launch of this charter. #hearingcare #hearinghealth #tinnitus #hearingprotection #audiology

New NTIA Listen for Life Charter Launches to Safeguard Workforce and Consumer Hearing ‘Over half of gig goers and over 90% of workers say they think loud music has damaged their hearing’ Half (50%) of regular gig goers think that loud music has damaged their hearing, a figure that climbs to an astonishing 92% for those who work in venues, a new poll reveals. It comes as a new Night Time Economy Charter launches to help music venues better look after the hearing health of colleagues and customers. The charter, developed by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), the trade body which represents the UK’s clubs, bars and pubs, is only one element of the NTIA’s Listen For Life Campaign. This campaign was launched last October to raise awareness and advocate on the importance of hearing protection, and to advise and provide resources to achieve safer listening environments. The charter sets out a 10-point-plan for businesses, which is in accordance with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global Standard on Safe Listening Venues and Events. It includes supplying employees with hearing protection, raising awareness of hearing health, and creating quiet zones designed to give people a break when they need one. Partnering with Specsavers, the NTIA has launched this charter as part of a new report called ‘It’s time to talk about hearing’, saying it’s worrying how common hearing loss and tinnitus are for those working in the night time industries. https://buff.ly/4cGgxlX

This Sarcoma Awareness Month, we’re celebrating an emotional reunion. David, a chordoma patient, was put back in touch with the optician who started his life-saving journey thanks to the remarkable efforts of the BBC 🧡 After experiencing double vision in January 2020, David visited his local Specsavers for an eye exam and was urged to visit A&E the same day for further investigation. With the quick action and diligence of his optician, doctors discovered a 23mm tumour near David’s cranial nerve, and his treatment started quickly. David’s story is a reminder of the important role that healthcare professionals play in the diagnostic journey of primary bone cancer patients, and we are committed to working with opticians to raise awareness of the red-flag symptoms so that more patients survive and thrive.
