About us

African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a flagship project of Agenda 2063 of the African Union — Africa’s own development vision. It was approved by the 18th ordinary Session of Assembly of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in January 2012 which adopted the decision to establish a Continental Free Trade Area. This initiative whose immediate implementation would provide quick wins, impact on socio-economic development and enhance confidence and the commitment of Africans as the owners and drivers of Agenda 2063. The AfCFTA aims at accelerating intra-African trade and boosting Africa’s trading position in the global market by strengthening Africa’s common voice and policy space in global trade negotiations.As at 5 February 2021, 36 countries have deposited their instruments of ratification., 36 countries have ratified the AfCFTA agreement. The general objectives of the AfCFTA are to: Create a single market for goods, services, facilitated by movement of persons in order to deepen the economic integration of the African continent and in accordance with the Pan African Vision of “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa” enshrined in Agenda 2063; Create a liberalised market for goods and services through successive rounds of negotiations; Contribute to the movement of capital and natural persons and facilitate investments building on the initiatives and developments in the State Parties and RECs; Lay the foundation for the establishment of a Continental Customs Union at a later stage; Promote and attain sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development, gender equality and structural transformation of the State Parties; Enhance the competitiveness of the economies of State Parties within the continent and the global market; Promote industrial development through diversification and regional value chain development, agricultural development and food security; and Resolve the challenges of multiple and overlapping memberships

  • The Secretary General of the #AfCFTA, H.E. Wamkele Mene, met today in Monrovia with the Liberian Minister of #Commerce and Industry (MOCI), Honourable Amin Modad. In consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MOCI is responsible for negotiating international #trade treaties and agreements, including the AfCFTA. During the meeting, the two principals discussed Liberia's participation in the African single market for goods and services. Special emphasis was placed on Liberia's development and participation in regional value chains, particularly in the automotive industry and agriculture, sectors identified as having significant potential. The Minister and the Secretary General agreed to work on technical aspects, focusing on capacity building and sensitizing the private sector to the opportunities created by the AfCFTA.

    𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 enhances women’s access to financial services, capacity building & access to technology for increased productivity. The financial inclusion of women calls for strengthened financial services and capacity building, especially for women living in rural areas, to gain access to technology and to use it to 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 in all industrious sectors, and with tailor-made financial products for the women. This will allow women to have access to formal and reliable means to save, access and borrow money. Studies have shown that women invest 70% of their financial resources in the social welfare cost of the family, particularly 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and the 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 of children, while human investment ranges from 30% to 40%. Financial literacy of women allows for them to not only manage funds at the various public and private institutional set-ups, but also in owning the funds. In the 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎-𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎, Member States have committed to take appropriate action to fully and efficiently implement their commitments to advance the welfare of women on the continent. #AfricasWomensDay

Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the #AfCFTA Secretariat, met with Dr. Joy Kategekwa, Director of the Regional Integration Coordination Office at the African Development Bank, and her team of Regional Integration Experts at the Africa Trade House to discuss strengthening collaboration between the Secretariat and the Bank for effective utilization of the One #Africa Market.
