“Missionary” and “Mercenary” aren’t just #labels. They represent mindsets that determine how #entrepreneurs build and operate. #Mercenaries focus on #profit, moving fast for short-term gains, often prioritising personal #gain over broader value. They hit #targets, strike deals, and drive growth, but sometimes at the expense of #relationships and long-term vision. #Missionaries, however, are driven by #purpose. This is particularly true for Ghana, where both large corporations and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) are navigating the same dynamic economic landscape. A business #mercenary is driven by one goal: #profit. In contrast, a business missionary is fuelled by a #commitment to something beyond personal profit. Business #missionaries start with a #purpose, a vision of what they want to change or create in the world around them. Their approach to #business is often slower, more deliberate, and focused on building lasting value. Mercenaries are quick to spot an opportunity, strike fast, and extract #value wherever possible. Mercenaries often operate with a #focus on short-term gains, seeing success in numbers, #revenue targets, and immediate results. I am not knocking down anyone’s #hustle. I’m just saying while mercenaries may be faster to make #profits, missionaries tend to build something more resilient, something that people #trust, something people can respect, generally speaking, of course. And for some strange reason, business missionaries don’t just build a stronger business #circle; they often end up with unexpected #financial success. Mark Zuckerberg turned down $1 billion from #Yahoo, yet now has a company worth circa $1.5 trillion. Or he could have ended up broke! Who knows! What I do know, is that #money can buy a lot in today’s world, but in the end, those who build with purpose find that #wealth follows as a natural by-product if they stick with it, and what they’ve created is something money alone could never buy. It's a significant shift in ownership and #responsibility. A successful #fundraise is a cause for celebration, but from my perspective, that’s when the real #work begins – that’s when more work should commence. Great #founders know this and are careful with how they #spend company resources. Especially when you’re just starting, every #cedi counts. Operating within this #Ghana and with global competitors already puts you a couple of paces back with one hand tied behind you, so if you don’t have the #discipline to respect company money as separate from your own, you’ll quickly find yourself burning through #cash faster than you can raise it.
