Spider-Man has hit the streets of Los Angeles, but a certain beloved character apparently won’t be coming with him. Director Joe Johnston says Captain America is amazingly entertaining. Plus Chris Hemsworth talks Thor and The Avengers. How about some spoilers!
Captain America
Joe Johnston explains that, above all, this movie is fun to watch:
“I watched the movie for the first time a few days ago and I just looked at the first cut and there is so much entertainment value – it’s just flat-out fun to watch. Maybe I’m somewhat biased – I was there [when we made it] – but, seriously, it’s funny, it’s exciting and there’s great visual effects. The movie is going to be something more than people are expecting. This movie is going to surprise some people. It is the origin story of Captain America but it is also something rare – it’s a period superhero film but there’s great action in it. You don’t normally think of guys driving around in 1939 sedans in an action film but there are some great action beats in it. It’s just a helluva lot of fun to watch.”
He also praised Chris Evans as Steve Rogers:
“All actors bring something unexpected to the role because they have to translate what’s on the page and make a real character out of the black-and-white text that’s there in the script. I hadn’t worked with Chris Evans and I wasn’t really that familiar with his work and I didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away by the subtlety that he brought to the role. It was really exciting to watch him. He added layers to the character that were not on the page and layers that were not in the comic books. He made Steve Rogers into a real flesh-and-blood character and it was fantastic to watch.”
Spider-Man Reboot
Here’s our first look at Spider-Man in action on the set of the movie. It’s just a single shot and relatively blurry, and we don’t know if it’s Andrew Garfield or a stuntman in the costume…but it’s something. There are some other interesting set photos, including a Daily Bugle van and a zoo sign that seems very Lizard-centric: [On Location Vacations and The Daily Blam!]

Despite set photos of a Daily Bugle van, its publisher J. Jonah Jameson reportedly won’t appear in the film at all. Assuming these reports are correct, this decision was probably made for story decisions – after all, the Daily Bugle isn’t as important to the high school student Peter Parker we see in this film as it is in his later life. Of course, I’d like to think the real reason is that J.K. Simmons was the definitive Jameson, and there’s not much point in trying to outdo him. [IGN]
Thor
At the Golden Globes, star Chris Hemsworth offered this take on the movie:
It’s incredible. It’s based on the comic book and it’s a beautiful meld of Viking and Norse mythology and science fiction and he becomes Earth bound. It’s got everything, love, action, a bit of comedy.
The Avengers
He also confirmed that he’s read the script for The Avengers, though I suppose we really could have assumed that by now. Here’s what he had to say about it:
The whole thing with Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and THOR. I just read the script, an early draft and it’s mind blowing. I have no idea how they’re going to shoot it. It’s huge and incredible.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II
Art director Andrew Ackland-Snow offers this moderately confusing quote – completely with randomly addressing Harry Potter as though he’s in the room – as to how Snape’s death scene is different in the movie than what Rowling originally wrote:
We wanted to change a bit where Snape dies. In the book, he dies on the Shrieking Shack, and we wanted to get him out from, not a conventional interior, but from that kind of box, to do it in a more dramatic atmosphere. We asked J.K. if she agreed for that to happen in there, because we hadn’t really seen it before. We made a crystal house, and you can see what happens in the boat house from there – Are you listening Harry? -, but also the school is in flames…and she loved it. Besides, it’s a very romantic place to die. Snape dies in a extremely good way, I gotta say.

Battleship writers Jon and Erich Hoeber have reportedly been commissioned to write the sequel to their Bruce Willis aging assassin movie. This doesn’t necessarily mean a sequel has been green lit, but obviously it’s a step in that direction. [Collider]

The Unit actor Michael Irby has reportedly joined the show as the villainous Pokerface, an ally of Vinnie Jones’s Scales who first shows up in episode 9. His character is described as “a ghoulish-looking thug dressed in a suit whose face is frozen in an expression of glum murderousness.” Romeo Miller, also known as the rapper Lil’ Romeo, plays his associate, a motormouthed thug named Lil’ Z who ends up confronting Pokerface and Scales. Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Here’s a clip and synopsis for the concluding chapter of a three-episode arc, “Witches of the Mist”:
Sent to track down the mysterious figure behind the deaths of several Jedi, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi find themselves on the trail of Count Dooku’s newest apprentice – the monstrous Savage Opress. However, Dooku and Asajj Ventress discover that their creation has a will of his own, and that he has grown more powerful than either of them had anticipated – perhaps even more powerful than the combined forces of the Jedi and the Sith. Driven by the Machiavellian machinations of Count Dooku, the series’ various villains come face to face at last in a climactic clash of red sabers. Dooku, Opress and Ventress – all are manifestations of evil, yet each is so distinct. It’s not until these three titans are brought together in the heat of conflict, however, that their nuances and differences become truly clear.
