Rebel Moon’s New Trailer Promises Even More Space Opera Grandness

Netflix's Geeked Week provides another look at the first half of Zack Snyder's two-part science fiction epic.

Since the start of the year, Netflix has been giving out a drip feed of information for Zack Snyder’s sci-fi action flick Rebel Moon. With almost a full month to go before it finally becomes a thing you can watch, a new trailer was shown at the streamer’s Geeked Week event, and it continues to look like the biggest sci-fi film you’ll likely see this year.

The film stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, a former soldier of the Imperium army who’s lived away from its reach on the moon of Veldt for several years. But when the Imperium comes to Veldt looking to take it over, Kora views the opportunity as a chance at redemption and recruits a team of warriors to push back the Imperium and the Mother World, the galaxy-controlling government that commands them. Said warriors on Kora’s side include Djimon Honsou’s ex-Imperium general Titus, cyborg swordswoman Nemesis (Doona Bae), mercenary Kai (Charlie Hunnam), brother-sister duo Darrian (Ray Fisher) and Devra (Cleopatra Coleman), and blacksmith beastmaster Tarak (Staz Nair).

Just from that pitch alone, it’s clear that Snyder and co-writers Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad have thrown Star Wars, Warhammer 40K, and Dune (and plenty more) into a blender to create Rebel Moon. The new trailer is as grand and majestic as the last one back in August, and definitely the kind of movie that may give Snyder the big yearslong franchise he’s wanted to be in charge of since 2013. And even if it doesn’t entirely hit that way with this first part, that’s what the second movie is for…along with whatever else Snyder and company have in the wings as part of his grand design.

Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire premieres December 15 for a limited theatrical run, then comes to Netflix the following week. Part Two: The Scargiver, is currently slated to release on April 19, 2024.
