The New Kind, a cyberpunk adventure in the tradition of Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell, is crowdsourced in every sense of the word. Creator Peter Hyoguchi reached out to nearly 250 artists and designers from around the world to create the look and effects for the series, and then he raised $100 thousand to fund it on Kickstarter. Through his company Ronin Film, Hyoguchi and his hundreds of collaborators are now close to having a finished product. This is the first teaser trailer for what looks like a fun, lo-fi indie series about the post-human future.

Though $100 thousand sounds like a lot of money to raise on Kickstarter, it’s actually pretty small potatoes for a VFX-packed series. The New Kind is exactly the kind of project we’d hope would develop out of all the tools now available to creators who want to make original stories without going through the studio system.

Here’s the plot synopsis:

Darvin and Yuka (17 and 18) fall in love but have never physically met — a psychic link connects them. They are The New Kind; The next link in Humanity’s evolution. If they ever find each other, it will cause a chain reaction, instantly transforming all young people into god-like beings. But before that can happen, Darvin and Yuka must survive an evil force hunting them.
