✨TEAM PRESENTATION✨ Hi, I’m Amani, a remote volunteer interpreter with I Have Rights in Arabic-English and French-English. Born and raised in Tunisia, I’m passionate about advocacy and social justice. My involvement in moot court competitions sparked my interest in migration and asylum policies, leading me to volunteer with I Have Rights, where I get to help individuals navigate the asylum process. This experience has also influenced my ongoing thesis research where I am exploring climate-induced migration, an urgent issue at the intersection of human rights and environmental justice. As you may notice, the background of my photo features jasmine flowers, symbolising my pride as a child of the Jasmine Revolution. I strive to embody the spirit of resilience and transformation in everything I do, aiming to promote systemic change and amplify the voices of those affected by global challenges. This is why I Have Rights is close to my heart, and I’m proud to contribute to the impactful work of the team and the organization.

⚖ On the 4th October, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found Greece guilty of violating the rights of seven unaccompanied children (UAC) by subjecting them to inhuman and degrading treatment in Samos in 2019 and 2020. The cases were brought by us at I Have Rights. and Still I Rise. Remarkably, in the judgement the Court recognised that the living conditions at the Samos Reception and Identification Center (RIC) constituted inhumane and degrading treatment for any individual, let alone for vulnerable children and adults. The two judgements, T.A. and Others and M.A. and Others, found the Greek authorities left children without any material or psychosocial support in the heavily overcrowded RIC on Samos in 2019 and 2020. For 6 to 10 months, the children had to fend for themselves in conditions which the former European Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović described as “struggle for survival”. ❌Still, in 2024, the treatment of unaccompanied children remains highly concerning in the new Closed Control Access Centre on Samos. Until their transfer to the mainland unaccompanied children are continually detained in the centre and are sub-detained for 16 hours a day in the so called “safe zone” a subsection of the facility which is surrounded by further layers of barbed wire. 📣We call on the Greek authorities to end the detention of people, especially unaccompanied children in the Samos Closed Controlled Access Centre. You can find more information and links to the judgements on our website: https://lnkd.in/eSRz7S6Y "

Greek Ombudsman Requests Authorities To Cease Unlawful Practice and Reinstate Reception Rights for Asylum Seekers After Illegal Waivers in Samos 🗓 In 2023, asylum seekers living in the Samos Closed Control Access Center (CCAC) were required by the authorities to waive their rights to reception conditions in order to be transferred to the mainland. The poor and overcrowded living conditions in the Samos CCAC at the time left many with no real choice but to sign away their rights to be transferred to the mainland with the hope of better standards of living. ⚖ I Have Rights., Avocats Sans Frontières France, and MSF Greece - Médecins Sans Frontières Greece filed a joint complaint to the Greek Ombudsman, challenging the legality of this practice. The Greek Ombudsman has now issued a decision. In its decision the Ombudsman found that “a complete waiver of material reception conditions across the entire territory is not provided for by law”. ❌ ✊We now join the Ombudsman’s request for the authorities to cease the practice and to restore material reception conditions to those asylum seekers who signed these declarations. Read the press release and the decision on our website! - https://lnkd.in/e398KVJf

✨TEAM PRESENTATION✨ Hi everyone! I'm Jessica and I volunteer with I Have Rights’ Strategic Litigation Team. I discovered I Have Rights. while volunteering with another NGO on Samos and was really intrigued by the work that they were doing to increase awareness of the many human rights violations that occur in Samos and advocate for change. Two years on, I’m very grateful that I can stay connected to Samos through the Strategic Litigation Team. I’m also extremely grateful to be able to use my master's in international refugee and migration law to contribute to some of the amazing work that I Have Rights does.

✨TEAM PRESENTATION✨ Hi, I am Mara. I have been involved with the legal information project on Samos since 2019 and was part of the transformation of the project from Refugee Law Clinic Berlin to I Have Rights. Currently I am part of the board and the Steering Committee, in the past I have contributed as an interpreter, a project coordinator and as admin & team coordinator. Apart from my involvement with I Have Rights, I am a social worker offering legal counselling for queer asylum seekers in Germany. I think legal information gives some power back to people on the move who in a lot of regards have no power over their situation. It is great that in I Have Rights we are combining individual legal support with advocating for change while caring for each other within the team. This is why I Have Rights is a project that is very important to me and I am proud of what we have accomplished.
