For the first time since 1995, there were more than 100,000 refugees resettled through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). “In a challenging time with conflicts raging around the world, our country continues to stand for a proud legacy of welcome for those who have fled extreme violence and persecution," shared HIAS President mark hetfield. Welcome the Stranger. Protect the Refugee.
About us
There have never been more people seeking safety and so few places willing to protect and welcome them. More than 114 million people are fleeing persecution. Governments should be taking responsibility to support them, but instead, their responses are unacceptable. Founded more than 120 years ago, HIAS is there for refugees when and where they need help most. We are a Jewish humanitarian organization that works in the United States and 20+ other countries, providing vital services to refugees and asylum seekers of all faiths so they can rebuild their lives. With the Jewish community beside us, we also advocate for the rights of forcibly displaced people globally. Over our expansive history, we’ve confronted—and overcome—formidable challenges facing refugees. Today, we are a leader with the expertise, partnerships, and values necessary to respond to the global crisis. Refugees deserve a world in which they find welcome, safety, and opportunity. With you, we can create it. Learn more and take action at HIAS.org.

Reflections from HIAS President mark hetfield on Rosh Hashanah. This year brings an especially poignant High Holidays season as we grapple with ongoing crises around the world, horrific violence and loss in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and the heartbreak of the missing hostages on our hearts. But it’s our legacy to never stop fighting. We will be there for refugees and displaced people in need, working to create a world that treats all of us with compassion, respect, and kindness.

Civilians must be protected. No matter what. We are devastated by the escalating violence in the Middle East. As always, our hearts are with civilians everywhere, who deserve to be protected. We're monitoring the situation as it evolves to determine the impact on the vulnerable populations that we serve.

Storm Boris recently struck Central and Eastern Europe, causing the worst flooding in at least two decades and inflicting damage on eight countries. Romania was particularly hit hard, with devastating floods displacing thousands of people. In the Galați province, our partner Inima de Copil’s children’s center was severely damaged, directly impacting the 35 children who rely on the center and their family members. Due to the area's poverty, many parents have had to migrate overseas, leaving children in the care of elderly relatives. This situation makes these households extremely vulnerable, with no one available to ensure that family members have access to basic necessities. Today, the Biden administration double-downed on the border shutdown in June. In case you forgot: the rule effectively sealed the U.S.-Mexico border to people seeking safety for the duration of the time that border encounters were at a daily average of 1,500 per day. Today’s update only keeps safety even farther from reach by implementing changes in how that number is calculated and how the rule is implemented. Read our statement: https://lnkd.in/eyt-Dctn

Bringing leaders from across communities together in dialogue. HIAS South Africa was recently honored to host interfaith and religious leaders from the KZN Inter-religious Council and Religions for Peace South Africa and leaders from the KwaZulu-Natal refugee, asylum seeker, and migrant community. This was an opportunity for leaders from both communities to share their interests and concerns and provided a space to build communication and cooperation we hope to maintain in the future. Thank you to everyone who participated!
