Yesterday, SNF celebrated the inauguration of Alexandrian Breath, a multipurpose space located in the heart of Athens, created with support from SNF and other funders. This new educational and cultural center, envisioned by the Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, was built to serve the community and function as a hub for people from all backgrounds. We were proud to have been part of its development and yesterday’s ceremony, which featured the President of the Hellenic Republic, community stakeholders, supporters, and friends, as well as a joyful performance by renowned Greek artist Alkistis Protopsalti.

Providing frontline health care can take a toll, and AMREF Health Africa has been deliberate about providing mental health support to the health care workers running mobile clinics and offering services from newborn care to vaccines to tens of thousands of people affected by flooding in Kenya.
The recent floods in Kenya triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing over 293,000 people and threatening access to essential health services. Amidst this urgent situation, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) stepped up to support AMREF's emergency response efforts, bringing crucial relief to the hardest-hit communities. With SNF's support, Amref: ✅ Deployed mobile clinics and health camps, delivering care to over 55,000 people directly, with another 137,000 indirectly benefitting. ✅ Provided essential services, from vaccines and chronic disease management to maternal and newborn care. ✅ Distributed 40,000 water purification tablets, hygiene products, and dignity kits, significantly reducing the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera. ✅ Offered mental health support to frontline healthcare workers, helping them cope with the trauma of the crisis. Beyond addressing immediate needs, the partnership aimed to strengthen the resilience of affected communities against future disasters. By promoting safe hygiene practices and enhancing surveillance systems, SNF and Amref created a lasting impact on those communities." As Aurélie Avice, SNF Programme Officer, aptly put it: "In their tireless work to expand access to quality mental and primary health care, Amref responded with the speed to meet real needs in real-time and the vision to proactively promote health and wellbeing." Together, we proved that #CollaborationForImpact could change lives, even in the toughest of times. "The principle which guides us at SNF is ‘empowering humanity.’ And at 251 Air Force General Hospital, you honor this same principle and put it into practice every day, taking care of, for example, citizens who are not connected to the Air Force, people from remote islands, but also the members of the Fire Corps who find themselves on the front lines so often every year, as well as so many more.” As part of our Global Health Initiative (GHI), SNF supported upgrades at the 251 Air Force General Hospital in Athens. The completion of this grant, which involves new equipment for five departments was celebrated at a ceremony where Senior Advisor to the SNF Board of Directors Vassilis Kaskarelis delivered remarks. Thank you to Doctors for Madagascar for the care they provide in difficult circumstances, and congratulations to this new mother!
🚑✨ **Ambulance Mission Successful in Ejeda - August 12, 2024** ✨🚑 We would like to share with you a particularly emotional intervention by our team, "Doctors For Madagascar," which took place on August 12, 2024. We received an urgent call regarding a woman about to give birth, located about 50 km from Ejeda, with no means of transport to reach the hospital. ⏳💔 At 6 PM, we set off from Ejeda, our priority being to save the lives of both the mother and the baby. After a four-hour drive in challenging conditions, we arrived at the location at 8 PM and safely transported the woman to SALFA Hospital in Ejeda, where we arrived at 10 PM. 🙏 The chief surgeon at SALFA Ejeda was there to welcome the patient. He and his team diagnosed the need for an immediate C-section and took her directly to the operating room. The surgery was successful, and a happy, healthy baby was born just under an hour later. Both mother and baby are doing well. 🏥👶 A huge thank you to the entire Doctors For Madagascar team on the ground for their dedication and professionalism. We would also like to express our deep gratitude to our partners, the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (German Corporation for International Development Cooperation), whose invaluable support made this mission possible. Together, we are making a difference! 💪❤️ #doctorsformadagascar #actdontwatch #publichealth #HealthcareForAll
