𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 (𝗦𝗢𝗗): Quality Assurance utilising solar measurements and simulations 🌞 The video captures part of the work done for the Solar Obstacle Detector (SOD), designed to identify deployment status - whether a site is optimally positioned or influenced by obstacles. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: The red line shows real irradiance data from Cevio, Switzerland - a station within our own monitoring network, over one year (2/9/2023–1/9/2024), with distinct dips close to sunrise and sunset when mountain shadows affect sunlight. The dark red line reflects our estimations of solar irradiance, which accounts for the mountain shading effect. - 𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲: Brown shading shows the highest angle between the station and nearby peaks, helping us assess when direct sunlight reaches the station despite terrain. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? Our goal: create a robust QoD component to distinguish between natural terrain shading and artificial obstructions like buildings or trees that impact solar irradiance, but also the rest of weather readings recorded by a station. It lets us pinpoint natural vs. man-made influences on sunlight exposure, but indirectly to parameters like wind, precipitation and temperature. Our team has been analyzing the impact of 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 on Florida, and we’ve prepared some insightful data from our St. Petersburg weather station. 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵 𝟭: A comparison of forecasted and observed wind speeds. Actual wind speeds 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 all forecasts initialized just 3 days before the hurricane made landfall. Some models didn’t even predict landfall in this area! 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵 𝟮: RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) scores for wind speed forecasts, initialized 5 days before landfall. Lower RMSE values show better accuracy, with models like 𝗜𝗖𝗢𝗡 and 𝗨𝗞𝗠𝗢 performing the best during this time period. 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 - St. Petersburg, Florida 🌪️ Last night, 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 made landfall near 𝗦𝘁. 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴, bringing intense winds as predicted. There was a noticeable 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀, with 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟱-𝟯𝟬 𝗺/𝘀 (54-108 km/h.) At its peak around midnight, our forecasted 𝟲𝟬 𝗸𝗺/𝗵 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 proved accurate, marking a 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝟮-𝟯 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 impact. Many observed a brief calm as the eye of the storm passed, before strong winds resumed shortly after.
