The Terminator Predicted our Fears and The Dark Side of AI, 40 years ago. Many AI researchers resent the Terminator obsession altogether for exaggerating the existential risk of AI at the expense of more immediate dangers such as mass unemployment, disinformation and autonomous weapons. "First, it makes us worry about things that we probably don't need to fret about," writes Michael Woolridge. "But secondly, it draws attention away from those issues raised by AI that we should be concerned about." The philosopher Nick Bostrom, whose 2014 book Superintelligence popularised the existential risk of "unaligned AI" (AI that is not aligned with human values and wellbeing). There are more recent, and more plausible, influential films about AI, including Ex Machina and Her, but when it comes to the dangers of the technology, The Terminator reigns supreme 40 years after its release. The Terminator, then, is a thriller, a love story, a time-hopping rumination on free will and a satire about our dependence on technology. It is anti-corporate, anti-war, anti-gun and largely anti-machine. The Terminator would become one of the most profitable films of all time, grossing $78.4m. His lead actor Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder of unproven talent, did not have high hopes. In the 1920s, it stood to reason that machine intelligence would walk and talk, like Frankenstein's monster. The popularity of lethal robots led the science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov, in 1942, to draw up the "three laws of robotics": the first ever attempt to define ethical AI. In the real world, the field of artificial intelligence officially began in 1956 at a summer school at Dartmouth University, organised by computer scientists John McCarthy (who coined the term) and Marvin Minsky. Their ambition was to design machines that could think like humans, but this proved much harder than they had imagined. The history of AI is one of boom and bust: a cycle of so-called "AI springs" and "AI winters". Google’s search dominance is shrinking. Google will remain the biggest search player, maintaining a 48% share of American search advertising revenue. Amazon next year will control nearly a quarter of US search ad dollars. Google is the fourth-most-valuable public company on the planet. At $2.1 trillion, its market value trails only Apple, Microsoft and AI chip darling Nvidia. The company lost another ruling in August, when a federal judge found Google is operating an illegal monopoly in search. That ruling could result in the eventual breakup of the company’s search business. TikTok, the fastest growing social network, is getting into into the search business. And Amazon has done something few other tech giants have managed up to this point: create a habit. When you want to buy something, you typically go to Amazon — not Google. In the United States alone, it’s forecast to bring in $27.8 billion in search revenue next year, second only to Google’s $62.9 billion, according to eMarketer. Google is working on exactly this technology with its Gemini product, but its success is by no means secured — especially with Apple partnering with OpenAI and other companies quickly entering the market. Google’s in no threat of vanishing. But all massively dominant companies have a reckoning of some sort over time. GE, a Dow mainstay for more than a century, broke up last year and is a shell of its former dominant self. Sears went bankrupt in 2022 and is practically out of business. US Steel, once the backbone of American industry, is trying to sell itself to a Japanese company. Decades from now, could we look back at Google the way we do Yahoo or Ask Jeeves? 5 Nobel-worthy discoveries that haven’t won the prize: Transformative AI Artificial intelligence, or AI, is transforming people’s lives at an unprecedented pace. It’s a crowded field, but two names stand out, according to David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at Clarivate’s Institute for Scientific Information. Pendlebury identifies “Nobel-worthy” individuals by analyzing how often fellow scientists cite their key scientific papers throughout the years. The two key figures are Demis Hassabis and John Jumper, the Google DeepMind inventors of the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database — an AI program that decodes the 3D structures of proteins from amino acid sequences that at least 2 million researchers around the world have used. AlphaFold acts as a “Google search” for protein structures, providing instant access to predicted models of proteins, accelerating progress in fundamental biology and other related fields. Since the pair’s key paper was published in 2021, it has been cited more than 13,000 times, which Pendlebury described as an “exceptional number.” Out of a total of 61 million scientific papers, only around 500 have been cited more than 10,000 times, he said. Jumper and Hassabis have already won the 2023 Lasker and the Breakthrough prizes. A Nobel Prize for chemistry may be in their future, Pendlebury said, along with a third researcher, David Baker, director of the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington School of Medicine, who laid the groundwork for AlphaFold. Hollywood's big boom has gone bust For over a decade, business was booming in Hollywood, with studios battling to catch up to new companies like Netflix and Hulu. But the good times ground to a halt in May 2023, when Hollywood’s writers went on strike. The strikes lasted multiple months and marked the first time since the 1960s that both writers and actors joined forces - effectively shutting down Hollywood production. But rather than roaring back, in the one year since the strikes ended, production has fizzled. Projects have been cancelled and production was cut across the city as jobs have dried up, with layoffs at many studios - most recently at Paramount. It had a second round of layoffs this week, as the storied movie company moves to cut 15% of its workforce ahead of a merger with the production company Skydance. Unemployment in film and TV in the United States was at 12.5% in August, but many think those numbers are actually much higher, because many film workers either do not file for unemployment benefits because they’re not eligible or they’ve exhausted those benefits after months of not working. As a whole, the number of US productions during the second quarter of 2024 was down about 40% compared to the same period in 2022. Globally, there was a 20% decline over that period, according to ProdPro, which tracks TV and film productions. That means less new movies and binge-worthy shows for us. But experts say the streaming boom wasn’t sustainable. And studios are trying to figure out how to be profitable in a new world when people don’t pay for cable TV funded by commercials. “The air has come out of the content bubble,” says Matthew Belloni, the founder of Puck News, which covers the entertainment industry. “Crisis is a good word. I try not to be alarmist, but crisis is what people are feeling.” Recent data shows the entertainment industry contributes over $115bn (£86bn) annually to the region's economy, with an employment base of over 681,000 people, the LA mayor said.
