Today is a sad day, and whereas I don't want to use this platform to share personal grief, I want to make an exception today for our Dutch hero, Johan Neeskens. Yesterday #johanneeskens passed at the age of 73 years. This morning at the office, our infamous in-house "generation Z" or whatever they are called today, had no idea of who Johan Neeskens was. I couldn't believe my ears. So I started with a history lecture to my young staff, not much to their liking but very much needed. In the 1970s when Ajax and the Dutch National Football (soccer) Team conquered the world with a game play never seen before, Johan Neeskens was the driving force on the midfield. Where #JohanCruyff took the spotlight, it was Johan Neeskens who made it possible for Cruyff to excel. They played together at Ajax, Barcelona and the Dutch National team. At Barcelona he was the most popular player aka "Johan El Segundo". If you enjoy watching Manchester City, Bayern Munich or FC Barcelona play, please note the basis of their game leads back to that of Ajax of the 70s. Neeskens' work ethics were next to none, so were his tactical and technical skills. And he scored goals, 5 at the World Cup of 1974. Like in successful businesses, you have the visible leaders who can only excel by the value of the back up team. And Neeskens was it all. To understand his greatness, one just has to read the international papers today, such the Gazzetta Dello Sport, the leading Italian newspaper who didn't spent less than 4 pages honouring this Dutch master. Johan Neeskens came from a poor family where he and his brother had to sleep in the living room. He was gifted with amazing talent and combined that with a force of nature, ambition and he was afraid of no-one.. He never forgot where he came from, he was modest and friendly till the end. And that my dear generation Z deserves some recognition and awareness. #genz #football #toys #ajax #barcelona

Let me start by saying, you don't have to read my posts, but if you want to learn something valuable, then keep reading. My last post was received with smiles & respect, although not by everybody. My point was/is: LinkedIn is not Facebook, people! Let me start with a little history, as most people here on LinkedIn post their good & evil of the current moment. Let me give you some dept, something to think about and indulge you in some educational insights. This post is meant to highlight someone who made an impact on our industry, created a paradigm shift and should get some well deserved credit and respect from us. And he reminds me of someone...and I am not surprised. Napoleon(e) Bonaparte was an ambitious, charismatic leader, but Napoleon was also a reformer, revolutionizing the French military, reorganizing French education, and sponsoring the Napoleonic Code, a model of later civil-law codes. His driving passion, however, was to expand French dominion through military conquest (source: Brittanica). His passion for expansion eventually led to his downfall, it was all about Napoleon himself at the end. Our toy industry has many wannabe Napoleons. I don't need to name them here, do I? That would take me like 1000 posts to do so and requires Jeremy Padawer's help as I have zero experience, let alone time to do that. BUT do you know we have a genuine look-a-like Napoleon amongst us? Not only in terms of vision & strategy, but also from a physical perspective. Both Napoleon and he share the same length, also their hair cuts have a remarkable resemblance. The man I am talking about created a toy hub that was recently attended by no less than 250 suppliers and 1000's of customers from around the globe, pretty much out of no where. He saw the opportunity a couple of years ago, then put some brains together and worked it all out with some local help from a Real Estate representative (John W. Ollen) who funny enough reminds me of Winston Churchill, would he only stick a cigar in his mouth. So who is this man, the visionary, the look-al-like Napoleon? Well his name is Jonathan Busher and we can thank him for what the LA Previews are today. Of course I had to guide him a bit through the process. Jonathan being from the UK and being compared to a guy from France, that hurts as much as for an Italian to see Jonathan eating pizza with pineapple. Whatever it is all honours should go to Jonathan! There is a significant difference between Napoleon and Jonathan. Jonathan is modest and his passion for expansion serves the industry and not for the sake of his own good. Therefore his desire for expansion will never lead to his down fall or that of the industry. A big shout out to Jonathan Busher is the least we can do. Thanks! #toys #toyindustry #LApreviews

Years ago, I started posting articles about our crazy toy industry on Linkedin. The response was amazing. Soon many others in the industry tried to follow in my footsteps. Some say I should take pride in these people seeing me as the example of great taste. Just to name a few: Richard North, Richard Derr, Jeremy Padawer, Anton Rabie, The LOL-man and many others, all trying to share their success-stories, learnings, promoting their books, do's & dont's and ofcourse promoting their toys. What followed was a battle for attention. For likes, support and a positive comment. A regular public bitch fight between some of the biggest ego's in our industry was a bonus. That is the burden of my life setting the example, the trend, with many people to follow...then just to see them all publish an overload of posts on a daily basis. Volume over value. I can't track these posts anymore. Do you? I must have created a monster! And I admire them all. Geniuses are they. Just to give an example: While I was busy chasing girls and annoying my parents as a teenager, Jeremy Padawer found time to write 1000 letters to famous people. Thousand letters!! Only a genius can do that. Just imagine the effort. And how do I know about this? Well thanks to linkedin! And I am sure Jeremy is going to share all 1000 letters with us in the years to come. Mark my words! Just imagine during his puberty, Jeremy's hormones conversing with eachother about what to with Jeremy and then one of them saying: "Hey, let's make him go write a lot of letters...". Obviously my hormones where pushing me in a very different direction. Or take Richard North. His infamous curly hairstyle was specifically designed during his teenage hippie years in the 1960s. Once married...it still took him another 50 years to change his hair style. And how do I know that? Well, Richard shared it recently on this platform, including picture of proof. Richard to me is the Harry Potter of our industry. Years ago, I decided to set up camp in Los Angeles. Pioneer it, check it out, work the streets. Yes Mattel, MGA, Playmates and some others have been based in LA for decades, but I saw LA as the future 'global' centre of 'branded' toys. Soon word was on the street (us usual). 2 years ago LA had 35 toy suppliers, last year 70 and the coming 2 weeks of LA Previews:...250 (!) toys suppliers have followed my path since. Even the The Toy Association realised "you can fight it, but you can't beat it" setting up their own LA toy show as part of LA previews: Isn't that the world upside down?!? But like with linkedin, did I create a monster as the pioneer of the 'Global' LA Previews? 250 suppliers in different locations presenting newnewss to the world with the majority of the customers coming the 2nd week. Will this go seamlessly? Volume over value? Fingers crossed. Where is my award by the way? #toys #toyindustry #LApreviews #tradeshows #toytrade James Zahn John Baulch Alfred Kropfeld
