Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden
Non-profit Organizations
KFBG is a conservation and education centre. Please help us preserve the harmony of nature for people and wildlife.
About us
Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) is situated in the rural New Territories, on the northern slopes of Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong’s highest mountain. Two steep spurs enclose its deep-set valley. Within KFBG are streams, woodlands, orchards, vegetable gardens, walking trails, live animal exhibits, floral exhibits, sustainable agriculture demonstration plots, art exhibits, a wild animal rescue centre, a native tree nursery, and, other conservation and education facilities. On 20th January, 1995, the Legislative Council of Hong Kong passed an Ordinance (KFBG Chapter 1156) incorporating KFBG as a non-profit corporation designated as a conservation and education centre with a new mission. It is a unique public-private partnership, for while the KFBG Corporation is a public organisation, it is privately funded by the Kadoorie Foundation (over HKD 100 million per year); these funds are supplemented by small donations from the public and occasional project-related Government grants that enable us to extend our work. KFBG’s three core programmes - Nature Conservation, Holistic Education and Sustainable Living - are constantly evolving as they strive to harmonize humanity’s relationship with nature. In addition to the many on-site courses, workshops and special events that we run for the education and revitalization of visitors, we implement projects throughout Hong Kong, South China and other parts of the Indo-Burma region to better protect and restore biodiversity.

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden reposted this
At Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG), we are proud to present our newly published Annual Report 2023/24, which you can download here: https://lnkd.in/gYuJ-7pP (printed copies will be available on 6 October). Over the past year, we continued planting trees and rescuing wildlife, but our nature conservation work goes beyond that, it includes holistic education and sustainable living, and we are pleased to present this in our upcoming webinar ‘Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden – Our Path and Practices to Nature Conservation, Holistic Education and Sustainable Living’. We will present the results of the past and present year and our plans during our webinar. In this interactive Zoom event, senior Department Heads Gary Ades will talk about Nature Conservation, Josephine Woo will highlight Holistic Education, and Idy Wong will outline our approach to Sustainable Living. This will be followed by an interactive Q&A session - all questions are welcome and we hope to see you on Wednesday October 16! You can register here: https://lnkd.in/gtRnvRqy. If you can’t make it but would like to receive a recording, then just register and you will receive the recording via email later. Date: Wednesday 16 October 2024 Time: 16:00 - 17:00 Hong Kong time / 09.00am – 10:00am London Moderator: Wander Meijer, Executive Director #Nature #Conservation #SustainableLiving #Education #Beauty

We are extremely excited to showcase our innovative conservation work at the KFBG booth during ReThink HK 2024. As part of this work, we are pleased to share that our biocharmaker is in full swing producing the “black gold” biochar, an essential ‘ingredient’ of our Habitat Restoration strategy and practice (see here for more details: https://lnkd.in/gRaQSG4E). Stop by our booth to learn more about our groundbreaking habitat restoration projects from resident restoration ecology experts. They'll discuss how biochar, made from the biocharmaker, improves soil fertility and boosts plant resilience. Visitors can see biochar samples up close and learn how applying it enhances forest biodiversity over the long-term. Did you know that wood waste has tremendous ability to nourish local ecosystems when properly managed? At KFBG, residues from routine tree works are carefully processed into useful materials such as wood chips instead of being sent to landfill. And many stacks are left lying and standing to naturally decompose – valuable habitat for insects and fungi alike. The creative and sustainable uses of these byproducts demonstrate responsible green waste upcycling. Practical, research-backed approaches such as ours can undoubtedly inspire more climate-friendly practices industry-wide. Do drop by our booth to gain a deeper understanding of habitat restoration through regenerative materials. Our passionate team looks forward to lively discussions on scaling such techniques for maximum land rehabilitation impact, and how you could be involved.

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) is thrilled to announce that we will once again be joining ReThink HK 2024 as the Nature Restoration Partner. KFBG has spent over two decades researching the most effective forest restoration methods. We've planted more than 100,000 native tree seedlings representing 300-plus species, as well as shrubs, palms and understorey plants. Critical to our work is nurturing these woodlands long-term to ensure their health and vitality. Our botanists also scour the territory for remaining native vegetation fragments. From these tiny reserves, they collect seeds of rare plants that are then propagated at our nursery. The seedlings are used to replant Hong Kong's lost forests through ecological restoration – an evidence-based process to reverse centuries of degradation and save rare plants from extinction. Joining ReThink HK for the second time allows us to share our forest restoration knowledge with Hong Kong's business leaders and ESG advocates. As the city's flagship platform for sustainability and innovation, ReThink HK is the perfect platform to champion large-scale native woodland restoration and its myriad benefits. These include carbon sequestration, improved air quality, erosion control and enhanced biodiversity, all of which are increasingly important for building climate resilience. We're excited to highlight nature-based solutions and discuss partnerships that can help heal Hong Kong's landscape on a greater scale.
