Curbing the Illicit Wildlife Trade: Shipping's Role in Shark Protection      🌊 On this World Maritime Day (26 September), we reflect on the vital role that shipping companies play in curbing the illicit shark fin trade—a significant threat to shark populations globally.    📊 A new report “A Review of Shipping Companies’ Carriage Policies on International Shark Fin Trade” by the Asia Pacific Counter-Illegal Wildlife Trade Hub and WWF-Hong Kong evaluates the impact of shipping bans on this trade. The findings reveal that the "No Shark Fin Carriage Policy" implemented by major shipping lines has contributed to a decline in Hong Kong's shark fin trade volumes.  🌍 However, it's important to note that changing consumer attitudes and global events also influence these trends. To maximise impact, the report emphasises the need for robust enforcement frameworks, standardised screening, and enhanced cooperation between shipping companies and conservation groups.     Full Report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/guDKu8k5 🤝 By working together, we can protect sharks and promote sustainability in our oceans. This timely research serves as a vital resource for policymakers, conservationists, and the industry—a beacon of hope in the fight to safeguard shark species.    Let's celebrate World Maritime Day by committing to a sustainable future for our oceans! 🌿 Co-creating a Sustainable GBA with Nature-based Solutions With HSBC's support, #GreaterBayArea (#GBA) #NaturebasedSolutions (#NbS) workshop brought together 42 participants in Guangzhou on July 26. Hosted by Shenzhen One Planet Foundation and SynTao, Dr. Luo Ming, Executive Deputy Director of the NbS Asian Hub, delivered a warm address and shared valuable feedback on our NbS co-creation efforts. Juntao HU, representing the NbS Asian Hub and IUCN China Office, provided insights on integrating the IUCN NbS Global Standard into project management cycle. Participants delved into impactful case studies, such as the Shenzhen River Estuary wetland restoration project by Xie Kaiqi of the Shenzhen Mangrove Wetlands Conservation Foundation (MCF), and the Ho Sheung Heung Nature Conservation Management discussed by Ho Nam Leung of The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS). Additionally, (翟永平)Yongping Zhai from Tencent Groups shared their carbon neutrality goals and practices. Engaging in practical learning and collaborative dialogues, attendees worked in groups to analyze NbS cases spanning coastal, marine, and terrestrial landscapes, as well as urban and natural settings. By utilizing the NbS standard to define and evaluate these cases, we collectively formulated recommendations for future actions. We are optimistic that these interdisciplinary discussions will propel the integration of NbS practices across sectors and boundaries, contributing to regional progress towards global conservation and development goals. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for both humanity and nature. 🌍🌱 Access our GBA NbS Infopack in 3 languages: EN: https://lnkd.in/gqTU7fJN TC: https://lnkd.in/gEv7Rdzp SC: https://lnkd.in/gCv62g5D Expand your knowledge and skills on NbS with IUCN Academy: https://lnkd.in/eDv97UeJ
