A great and important achievement for nature restoration across Europe! As our global food systems continue driving species loss and threatening biodiversity and a stable climate on our planet, rewilding nature is our best strategy for the way forward: Sustaining the current status by "sustainable practices" clearly is no longer good enough. We need to restore nature, give away room for species and nature to thrive once again, before its too late. 💥 BREAKING: We officially have the EU Nature Restoration Law! And what a ride it has been! Today, after a nail-biting last discussion, the EU Environmental Council finally adopted the law, marking the very last step for this long-awaited proposal to become law. "Today’s vote is a massive victory for Europe’s nature and citizens who have been long calling for immediate action to tackle nature’s alarming decline," says our #RestoreNature coalition. "After years of intense campaigning and many ups and downs, we are jubilant that this law is now reality - this day will go down in history as a turning point for nature and society." It's a huge win for the EU's nature, citizens, the economy, and all the people who supported the #RestoreNature campaign - over a million citizens, multiple companies and business associations, more than 6000 scientists, youth organisations, activists, and many more. HAPPY WORLD OCEANS DAY 2024! Is the Ocean our key ally for a sustainable food planet? Despite the fact that our oceans cover 71% of the planet’s surface, blue foods harvested today in our oceans only account for 2% of global human calories intake and 15% of our protein consumption. As it is becoming increasingly clear that our land-based agriculture system is peaking, fueling climate change and biodiversity loss at unprecedented speed, policy makers and investors believe that our oceans will turn into our most important source of food soon. But how should this happen at all? Over the past 20 years, Blueyou’s ocean impact team has been working with community-based fisheries and small-scale aquaculture producers worldwide, figuring out how to produce seafood more sustainably, in balance with nature and people. And here are our lessons learned so far: 1. Put communities and local producers first: Coastal communities are the true guardians of healthy oceans. Only prosperous communities can take care of our oceans. Desperate people are making desperate moves. 2. Do not repeat the mistakes we made on land: Feed-based animal food systems on land have ruined our planet. Transferring this system into our oceans is probably not a good idea. Let’s think about it once more. 3. Mimick mother nature: Promote nature-based, restorative farming systems. In combination with well-managed fisheries, such origins can provide 10 billion people with more than 400 Mil tons of nutricious, high quality seafood, without overshooting the planetary boundaries. Serving the ocean is more than a slogan. It is our mission to bring change to our food system. On this #WorldOceansDay, we celebrate the power of true blue foods. And we appreciate the work and daily efforts of the 9’450 smallholder producers in Blueyou’s fisheires and aquaculture programs which supply our customers with great seafood choices, harvested in balance with nature and people!
