Halloween can be a magical time, but it can also present unique challenges for families with neurodivergent children, including those with autism. Here are some tips from us at the Talos Foundation to help ensure a fun and stress-free celebration: 🎃 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲: Pick costumes that are comfortable and sensory-friendly. Avoid itchy fabrics and cumbersome accessories. Try on costumes before the big night to ensure they don’t cause any discomfort. 🎃 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: Try on costumes several times before Halloween to ensure they’re comfortable. Practice walking and doing simple activities while in costume to make sure nothing causes discomfort or distress later on. 🎃 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲: Plan a trick-or-treating route ahead of time. Choose familiar, well-lit areas and avoid overly crowded spots to help reduce anxiety and sensory overload. 🎃 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀: Have a strategy in place if things get overwhelming. This could include a calming corner, headphones to block out loud noises, or a favorite toy or sensory item. This can provide comfort and a sense of security in unfamiliar or overwhelming situations. 🎃 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗱𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: Pair your neurodivergent child with a sibling or a friend who can help guide them through the night and offer support if things become too stressful. 🎃 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 "𝗕𝗮𝘁-𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹": Develop a simple signal or word that your child can use if they feel overwhelmed and need a break or want to go home. 🎃 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿: Sort through treats together to ensure all items are safe and appropriate. This can also be a fun way to engage with your child and get them involved in the process. 🎃 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻: If going out is too stressful, consider hosting a small Halloween gathering at home with familiar friends and family. You can have themed games, a movie night, or a craft session with Halloween crafts. 🎃 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: After the festivities, take time to celebrate your child’s participation, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦. Emphasize the positives of the evening, reinforcing their successes. Let's make this Halloween inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. Customize these tips to fit your child's needs and have a spooky good time! 🎃 #HalloweenSafety #Neurodiversity #AutismAwareness #TalosFoundation #InclusiveHalloween #TalosFoundation #TalosHK #InclusionMatters

Her son, Alexander Talos Schaus, was denied access to an accessible toilet and wet himself because the person holding the keys didn't understand that he was disabled. That day, there was a realisation that much more needed to be done to foster awareness for neurodivergent individuals. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. We’ve launched corporate and community training programs led exclusively by neurodivergent trainers, helping companies and schools create more inclusive environments.
