Ethics, applied.

About us

We are a team of business professionals, character educators and academics working on developing resources, products and services to support the development of ethics in enterprises and communities. We take our name from the Japanese woodworking technique known as 'kigumi,' in which joints are held are held together by complementary forces, without the use of nails or adhesives. We believe that the character of a business or a person should be like kigumi: a balanced, interwoven set of forces that stand upright on their own merit, without any external pressures.

⚒ 🤝 Project-Based Learning & Community Service Summer Opportunity This summer we’re launching a virtual Cyber Ethics Hackathon for students who want to tackle a real-life social problem related to AI, tech or living in a digital world. Students will: 🧠 DEFINE a real-life problem affecting their friend group or community,  💻 RESEARCH relevant solutions and  📽 CREATE a short educational training video to inform other students just like them about the solution. Participants will be students from international and local schools across Hong Kong, Singapore and elsewhere across Asia. The Hackathon Kit is virtual and self-paced. We ask one teacher or parent to be kept in the loop, but the activities are entirely students-led to develop critical thinking and collaboration skills. Feel free to pass the info along to any interested parties as this is a grassroots event for any and all students across Asia who are passionate about community service and making a difference to the mental health and well-being of their communities. Students can register with their teacher / parent facilitator at https://bit.ly/3wXL6nm. #kigumigroup #aiethics #digitalliteracy #girlswhocode #steameducation #projectbaselearning #communityservice #socialemotionalintelligence

As companies and consumers gain more understanding of how important AI ethics are to ESG and sustainability, we’re betting that AI audits/assessments will come to be a legal requirement (or highly incentivised behavior) in the near future for jurisdictions across Asia. Pleased to share that Kigumi Group is now equipped to enter this conversation at a corporate level by gaining our certification to perform ethical assessments of any autonomous AI system from the international standard setting body for engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This globally recognised AI ethics certification (IEEE CertifAIEd TM) can be applied to any individual AI systems that a company or organisation is currently developing. It also can be used to assess an AI system that is already deployed (internally and externally) to set offerings apart from competitors, increase stakeholder buy-in, and cross-check organisational cybersecurity and data privacy practices for compliance purposes. As consumers continue to favour companies that are forward-thinking and ESG-centric, this credential offers an additional edge to a company’s ESG toolkit and sets a standard for ESG practice in the region. Thanks to Women of Hong Kong for hosting us at their lovely space last night for our panel on all things parenting and tech, which also happened to fall on International Girls in ICT Day this year. 👩💻 👩🔬 👩🏭 👩🚀 Deft-moderation by Janet Paskin, who brought her editorial and journalistic skills to steer what is an exceptionally broad topic area, ranging from social media, to neuroscience, to attention-based design, and of course, good old parenting and the importance of focusing on the fundamentals of human communication. Mostly it was simply pure FUN to sit alongside vibrant women Shalini Melwani and Arcadia Kim, who offer a mix of professional knowledge with personal parenting acumen and a healthy sense of humour that I’ll be continuing to play catch up to. From initial feedback it seems like similar panels and workshops are in our (tripartite) future for Hong Kong schools and PTA groups. Stay tuned 🎤

Pleased to share that Kigumi Group will be speaking on an in-person panel, "Values-Led Parenting in a Tech and AI Age" next month on 25 April 2024 in Hong Kong along with seasoned parenting + tech coaches Arcadia Kim and Shalini Melwani. If you’re in Hong Kong and are a parent or educator keen to learn about the importance of ethical competencies and skills for the future, and want to understand how to cultivate a values-driven mindset within their families in the context of emerging technology, we’d love to see you! We’ll discuss strategies for fostering critical thinking and emotional resilience for Gens Z and A; healthy relationships with technology that we can model for our kids; how to encourage children to think independently about their technology use rather than simply following trends; and how to ensure that children understand the implications of their actions online, both socially and ethically. We're thrilled to welcome Ayushi Kriplani to the team as a Spring 2024 intern! Ayushi will be working to co-create content for our Cybersafety digital literacy content area for kids, as well as help to build out our digital literacy platform where educators in Asia can access multilingual cyberethics trainings starting in early summer this year. A bit about Ayushi: she is a second year undergraduate student at George Washington University majoring in International Affairs and Computer Science with a minor in Arabic. Prior to joining the Kigumi Group, Ayushi completed a fellowship with the GirlSecurity (an organization dedicated to diversifying voices in the intelligence and security community) and particularly focused on cybersecurity and the impact it has on current threat intelligence strategies. Ayushi is also the Co-President of the Women in Cybersecurity student chapter at GW where she mentors other undergraduate students and co-leads bi-monthly seminars on cybersecurity principles. Welcome Ayushi and thank you for joining the team! #techethics #codeforgood #cybersecurityawareness #digitalliteracy #aiethics #womenwhocode #womenwholead

Studying the history of AI as it developed from its beginnings in neural networks to its current day trajectory in sub-areas like ML / DL yields fantastic insights for anyone working in the field (or in a tangential field, including tech ethics). Most critically, it quickly becomes apparent that in order to keep up with the changes and innovations in current AI you need to remain true to AI's foundations: it's commitment to diverse thought and transdisciplinary exchange. Read more in our latest opinion piece on why AI professionals should continue to cast a wide net in order to grow: https://lnkd.in/gAXyKrfx

Ethics l Education l Corporate Responsibility

I've been reading up on the Macy Conferences lately (with the guidance of our academic advisors who keep me on the straight and narrow) to wrap my head around how we can create more interdisciplinary forums for industry practitioners to connect to applied ethicists. The Macy Conferences were held between 1946 and 1960 and purposely brought together diverse academics from psychiatry, computer science, anthropology, neuroscience, mathematics, linguistics, psychology and child development and more. (Yes: there was a disappointing lack of "diversity" otherwise, but this was not something considered at the time.) Breakthroughs credited to the Macy Conferences include the codification of the concept of "information" as we currently know it in the 21st century. The question that's been knocking around my head for a long time now: If we know what we SHOULD be doing to improve social and environmental challenges and we HAVE the intellectual and economic capital to address these issues (at a societal level), WHY are we still struggling with the same old challenges? I hope part of the answer lies in helping currently siloed disciplines to reconnect. To rebuild those pathways that lead to cross-pollination between academia and industry; and internal pathways between academic disciplines. One start is through training tech professionals and leaders to think through a historical lens: including teaching them to understand the nature of scientific enquiry and the translation of science into commercial products. Read more about this in my article below.
