Investors and stakeholders pursuing long-term investments in sustainable and socially responsible companies increasingly demand Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) information. Since 2016, HKEX has required all companies listed on HKEX to disclose an ESG report according to Appendix 27 (HKEX ESG Reporting Guide). While the reporting standard has subsequently been enhanced in multiple rounds, demand for reliability and accuracy in ESG disclosures is growing exponentially. This has led to more companies seeking independent verification from third-party assurance providers. According to EY, only 15% of real estate companies listed on HKEX have sought independent assurance. Of these, only 34% obtained reasonable assurance. Companies faced verification challenges, including data challenges, costs, and long lead times, when gathering the relevant data for audit. This highlights the critical need for mainstreaming environmental assurance as businesses strive to align with global sustainability standards. Technology and consultants play a pivotal role in guiding businesses through regulatory compliance and sustainability practices. By conducting regular environmental audits and leveraging technology, Hong Kong's businesses can enhance their environmental performance while also meeting stakeholder expectations. The benefits vs. the costs of adhering to ESG principles are far greater for SMEs than for large corporations. With listed corporations increasingly adopting the latest ESG standards, the cost of compliance rises as operations scale and requirements become more complex. SMEs, with their agility, are well-positioned to meet these standards. However, the primary challenge they face is acquiring the necessary know-how, emphasizing the need for continuous learning and development. Integrating ESG practices into the firm’s operations is only a trend but a necessity for public companies in Hong Kong. ESG reporting requirements have become increasingly complex since the HKEX first mandated ESG reporting in 2016. With new climate disclosures coming into effect on January 1, 2025, companies face emerging compliance challenges as they align operational practices with ESG requirements. Effective Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance (GRC) are critical for firms to achieve sustainable success. Harmonizing company processes with GRC frameworks ensures compliance, helps mitigate risks, and enhances investor confidence. However, corporations, investors, and banks face challenges in their respective businesses as they adapt to evolving regulatory standards. To address these challenges, continuous training, and industry engagement are essential. Last week, Wizpresso 濃說 participated in the 4th Synergize GBA Forum, organized by EY in collaboration with Invest Hong Kong, 團結香港基金 Our Hong Kong Foundation and Shenzhen Foundation for International Exchange and Cooperation. The forum focused on “unleashing new quality productive forces” in the Greater Bay Area, covering key topics such as ESG, finance, and technology. The event attracted over 12,000 industry experts, including government officials, corporate leaders, and regulatory professionals, attending both in person and online. The Wizpresso 濃說 team builds stronger bonds at Boating Offsite! 🚤🎉  Apart from being a global financial center, Hong Kong is known for having a variety of water sports, including boating, surfing, wakeboarding, and kayaking, which are just 30 minutes away from anywhere in the city. Blessed with excellent weather, we hosted this year’s off-site at Sai Kung on a boat.
