🚀 AI2MED finalises innovative AI curricula for healthcare education The AI2MED project has reached an important milestone: the finalisation of comprehensive AI curricula for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Vocational Education and Training (VET). These programmes will equip future healthcare professionals with the skills to use AI effectively in the medical environment and bridge the gap between technology, clinical practise and ethics. AI is transforming diagnostics, patient management and clinical workflows. To prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals, the AI2MED curricula are aimed at medical students, researchers, healthcare managers and IT specialists working in the medical field. Focus areas for HEIs: ✅ Data Management & Cybersecurity – secure handling of patient data and compliance with regulations such as the GDPR ✅ Advanced Digital Competencies – mastering data visualisation, machine learning and predictive analytics ✅ Interpersonal and interdisciplinary communication – improving collaboration between healthcare professionals, AI developers and IT experts ✅ AI Ethics & Oversight – applying ethical AI principles in real-world clinical scenarios, in line with OECD guidelines VET curriculum: Practical AI in Healthcare The VET programme focuses on practical AI applications for technical and administrative medical staff to ensure that they can support AI systems in daily operations. 🎯 What’s next? Now that the curricula have been finalised, the next step is the development of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) to make AI education accessible to a wide audience. This initiative not only trains future professionals, but also strengthens the readiness of the healthcare sector for the integration of AI. We’re excited to shape the future of AI-driven healthcare! Want to learn more? An ambitious new project from the RCSI School of Population Health at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) seeks to use AI to enhance public health by promoting healthier and more sustainable food choices across Europe. Funded by the EU Horizon Europe programme, WiseFood Project is a three-year initiative that integrates advanced AI tools and real-world feedback to improve dietary habits and reduce environmental impact. Led by Dr. Claire Timon and Dr. Angela Flynn, WiseFood seeks to democratise access to reliable, science-backed information on healthy and eco-conscious eating. The project leverages AI techniques to provide tailored advice for better personal and planetary health. WiseFood will develop three AI-powered applications: ➡️ FoodScholar: A platform offering trustworthy information on nutrition, sustainability, and health. ➡️ RecipeWrangler: An AI tool that evaluates and improves recipes, balancing nutritional value with environmental impact. ➡️ FoodChat: A recommendation system providing personalised meal suggestions to encourage healthier and eco-friendlier diets. These applications will be tested in Living Labs in Ireland, Hungary, and Slovenia, involving over 300 households. Through co-design workshops and input from citizens, nutritionists, and policymakers, the tools will be refined to meet real-life needs. Principal Investigator Dr Claire Timon emphasised the project's goal to empower individuals to make informed, sustainable food choices. The initiative combines cutting-edge AI with participatory research to create meaningful change, from reducing food waste to tailoring meal plans based on local guidelines. Groundbreaking project that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance histopathological analysis spearheaded by IT Advanced Services (ITAS) and the Clinical Center of Montenegro with support from the Innovation Fund of Montenegro Why is this important? Colorectal cancer diagnosis is a complex and time-consuming process, requiring meticulous manual analysis by pathologists. Our AI-powered system will automate the detection of key pathological changes, improving accuracy, reducing workload, and enabling faster and more reliable diagnoses. How does it work? Using machine learning algorithms, the system will analyze medical images, identify dysplastic and malignant cells, and highlight areas that require further investigation. This AI-driven support will enhance decision-making and significantly improve patient outcomes. Advancing Telemedicine One of the most exciting aspects of this project is its potential to transform telemedicine. Digitalized pathology samples will allow for remote consultations and AI-assisted analysis, providing expert insights to healthcare facilities that lack full-time pathologists. Shaping the Future of Healthcare By integrating AI into pathology, we are taking a major step toward modernizing medical diagnostics and enhancing healthcare in Montenegro. This project has the potential to become a key tool in the fight against colorectal cancer, reducing mortality and improving the quality of life for patients. AI in healthcare offers great opportunities ⚕️ but also liability concerns ⚖️, especially when its decisions harm patients. Defining the responsibility for AI errors is crucial but not so easy. Italian law (Art. 590-sexies) shields doctors following guidelines, but applying this to AI remains difficult. Establishing causality between AI flaws and harm is not so easy, especially when dealing with autonomous learning systems. On the one hand, hospitals must ensure appropriate AI use and oversight, facing potential contractual liability. On the other, physicians face extra-contractual responsibility, requiring patients to prove causality. Negligent use of AI (e.g., uncertified algorithms) can lead to liability, even though traditional liability notions are insufficient for those related to AI use 🤖 because they call for a multi-faceted approach involving legal scholars, policymakers, developers, and professionals.
