We know how to build cities that don't cost the Earth. By integrating green infrastructure, cities can become more resilient, sustainable, and liveable for all. Here's how: 1. Embrace Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) 🔹 Plant more urban forests and create green corridors to improve air quality & biodiversity. 🔹 Implement green roofs & vertical gardens to reduce heat and enhance energy efficiency. 🔹 Restore wetlands and mangroves in coastal areas for natural flood protection. 🔹 Design water-sensitive urban spaces that reduce stormwater runoff and prevent flooding. 2. Expand Urban Green Spaces & Parks 🛝 Create multi-functional parks that provide recreational spaces & climate adaptation benefits. 💚 Turn underutilized spaces into community gardens & pocket parks for food security & well-being. 3. Promote Green Mobility & Sustainable Transport 🚶♂️ Make cities pedestrian & cyclist-friendly with shaded walkways & safe bike lanes. 🚆 Invest in electrified public transport like e-buses & metro networks to cut emissions. 4. Climate-Smart Urban Planning 📜 Integrate green infrastructure into national & local urban policies. 🏗️ Mandate green building standards & incentives for eco-friendly construction. 🌎 Align zoning laws with sustainable land use & conservation efforts. 5. Empower Community-Led Initiatives 🌱 Support urban farming & rooftop gardens to boost local food production & cooling. 💡 Foster grassroots climate action by involving residents in city greening projects. 🏘️ Ensure climate initiatives are inclusive & community-driven, addressing social equity. 6. Strengthen Water Management & Resilience 🌊 Use green-blue infrastructure like rain gardens, bioswales & permeable pavements. 🚰 Invest in urban water resilience strategies to combat drought & ensure clean water access. 7. Unlock Financing & Investment for Green Cities 💸 Leverage public-private partnerships for sustainable urban projects. 🌍 Tap into international climate funds for large-scale green infrastructure development. 📈 Offer tax incentives & subsidies for businesses & homeowners investing in green solutions. 🚨 We are looking for a city to host the 14th Session of the World Urban Forum! 📢 Participatory Planning and Design (𝗣𝗣𝗗) vs. Citizens' Advisory Committees (𝗖𝗔𝗖𝘀): Which one is right for your #Urban project? When it comes to public participation in urban projects, choosing the right methodology is key to ensuring community buy in and successful outcomes. Let’s compare these two popular approaches: 𝟭. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 (𝗣𝗣𝗗) What it is: A hands-on, collaborative approach where stakeholders actively contribute to the planning and design process through workshops, mapping exercises, and co-creation sessions. ✅ Pros: - High Engagement: Direct involvement of community members fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment. - Creative Solutions: Diverse perspectives lead to innovative and context-specific designs. - Tangible Outcomes: Visual tools make abstract ideas concrete and easier to understand. ❌ Cons: - Time-Intensive: Requires significant time and resources to organize and facilitate workshops. - Limited Reach: May exclude those who cannot attend in-person sessions - Risk of Dominance: Vocal or influential participants may overshadow quieter voices. 🥇 Best for: Projects that benefit from creative, community-driven solutions, such as park designs, public space revitalization, or neighborhood planning. 📍 1. Amsterdam, Netherlands – Zuidasdok Urban Redevelopment 𝟮. 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀' 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘀 (𝗖𝗔𝗖𝘀) What it is: A structured, ongoing engagement process where a representative group of stakeholders provides input and guidance throughout the project lifecycle. ✅ Pros: - Representative Input: Ensures diverse voices are heard by including members from different community segments. - Continuous Engagement: Provides a steady feedback loop, allowing for adjustments as the project evolves. - Efficiency: Streamlines decision-making by working with a smaller, focused group. ❌ Cons: - Limited Participation: Only a small group is directly involved, which may leave others feeling excluded. - Risk of Tokenism: If not managed well, the committee may be seen as a checkbox exercise rather than a meaningful engagement tool. - Time Commitment: Requires sustained involvement from committee members, which may be challenging for some. 🥇 Best for: Long-term, complex projects like infrastructure development, city-wide policy changes, or large-scale redevelopment plans. 📍 London, UK – Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) 👉 Both methodologies have their strengths and challenges, the best choice depends on your project’s goals, scale, and community context. Urbanization is advancing rapidly, making sustainable urban planning more crucial than ever. The report "𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁-𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀" offers a comprehensive guide to transforming fast-growing urban areas into vibrant, transit-oriented communities. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀: ➡️ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Sustainable urban development requires a strong connection between land use regulations and transport planning. By aligning these elements, cities can foster higher densities, encourage mixed land uses, and create pedestrian-friendly environments—key factors for building efficient public transport systems. ➡️ 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: The report introduces a sandbox model that simulates the impact of land use regulations on transit ridership. It provides valuable insights into how policy changes—such as adjusting floor area ratios and parking requirements—can influence public transport usage and improve walkability. ➡️ 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻: Mobility needs differ between men and women, and urban planning must reflect that. The book highlights the importance of designing safer, more accessible spaces, particularly for women, through well-lit public areas and "eyes on the street" principles. ➡️ 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁-𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗧𝗢𝗗): To create walkable, transit-oriented urban spaces, cities should adopt market-friendly zoning policies that encourage higher densities and mixed land uses. Developing multi-modal streets with wide sidewalks, improving traffic management, and ensuring adequate public spaces for pedestrians and transit users are also essential steps in fostering vibrant, accessible, and sustainable urban environments. 🔗Read this essential report for urban planners, policymakers, and anyone passionate about creating sustainable and inclusive cities: http://wrld.bg/Rnkm50Vf7AR #Infrastructure #Transportation #Cities
