🎬 EcoCinema for Impact: Where Knowledge Meets Creativity This evening, CIFOR-ICRAF Nairobi, in partnership with the British Columbia Environmental Film Festival Society, hosted a special film screening and discussion on the role of film and storytelling in tackling environmental challenges. From the deep connection between Indigenous communities and salmon to Senegal’s fight against plastic pollution, Canada’s last roadless old-growth forests, and Sierra Leone’s innovative solutions to extreme heat—the films took us on a journey across the world, highlighting urgent environmental issues and the people working to solve them. The evening wrapped up with conversations and networking, bringing together filmmakers, policymakers, and environmental advocates to exchange ideas and inspire action. As our CEO, Eliane Ubalijoro, said: "Film has the unique ability to transcend borders, connect us to the realities of our planet, and inspire action in ways that facts and figures alone cannot." A huge thank you to everyone who joined us. Pezhman Hadavi | Jennifer Jackson| Michael Dougherty | Bruce Scott |

How much funding is flowing into Central Africa’s forestry and environmental sectors? A new update to the 2019 Observatory for Forests of Central Africa (OFAC) study maps the latest international financial flows, building on previous research from 2008–2017. Despite growing global commitments, Central Africa received just 11% of forestry and environmental official development assistance (FEODA) to tropical regions—a mere USD 2 billion out of USD 15 billion. With revised nationally determined contributions (NDCs) now in place, COMIFAC countries have fresh opportunities to secure funding. What has changed since the last analysis? For generations, Zambia’s Miombo woodlands have provided communities with a seasonal treasure—wild mushrooms. Now, thanks to the #Z4ABC project, these forest fungi are not only an important food source but also a source of livelihoods. Through capacity-building efforts, communities in Muchinga Province are learning to cultivate, process, and market mushrooms sustainably—tapping into new economic opportunities while preserving their forests. A forthcoming documentary, Nature’s Pantry: Mushrooms of the Zambian Miombo, captures this journey. In collaboration with PlanetFungi photographers Catherine Marciniak and Steve. Axford, the CIFOR-ICRAF team is bringing the story of Zambia’s mushrooms to the world. Co-funded by the European Commission's DeSIRA initiative and Finnish partners, the Z4ABC project is weaving together biodiversity, food security and economic empowerment— from the forest floor to international markets. Our work and that of our partners in the Yangambi Engagement Landscape has been featured in National Geographic. Local and international researchers are working to better understand forests and carbon dynamics in the Congo Basin, one of the world's most vital yet understudied ecosystems. For nearly 15 years, with the long-term support of the European Union, the Kingdom of Belgium and, more recently, the United Kingdom (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office), Good Energies Foundation, and SWIFT Foundation, we have been investing in infrastructure, technology, and research training to advance science and conservation in the region. This investment is making an impact on the ground: 🔹 Over 300 master’s and doctoral students trained through our collaboration with the University of Kisangani. 🔹 National Herbarium restored, with 150,000 specimens scanned and preserved in partnership with INERA and the Meise Botanic Garden. 🔹 The inauguration of the Congo Basin's first Wood Anatomy Lab and Eddy Covariance tower in 2020 – in partnership with INERA, Royal Museum for Central Africa, and Ghent University – demonstrates the Government of the DRC's commitment to scientific advancement, enabling crucial forestry research, supporting measurements of greenhouse gas exchanges in forests, and contributing valuable data to climate change research. Robert Nasi, CIFOR-ICRAF Director of Science, represented CIFOR-ICRAF at the Climate and Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Development – Policy, Investment and Innovation conference in Bhutan, organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Institute. He shared insights on carbon markets and pricing, highlighting nature-based solutions, and moderated a panel on the Water, Forest, and Agriculture Nexus—a critical issue in a region where 60% of the world’s population depends on just 36% of its freshwater. He engaged with, Hon. Younten Phuntsho, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Bhutan, Govinda Prasad Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Nepal, Yvonne Pinto, Director General, International Rice Research Institute, Simon Heck, Director General, International Potato Center (CIP), and Pema Gyamtsho, Ph.D, Director General, ICIMOD. Discussions with Karma Tenzin (Director, Department of Forests & Park Services, Bhutan) and Sonam Togbay (Chief Forestry Officer, Bhutan) focused on potential collaboration in agroforestry, restoration, and sustainable forest management. With one of the world's highest forest coverage rates and a carbon-negative status, Bhutan is a global conservation leader. Strengthening partnerships will be key to balancing environmental sustainability with economic opportunities. #ForestsMatter
