The word "Batik" comes from the Javanese words "amba," meaning "to write," and "titik," meaning "dots." Together, Batik signifies the art of creating intricate patterns with dots on cloth. Recognized by UNESCO in 2009 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Batik stands as a proud symbol of Indonesia's rich cultural heritage. On this National Batik Day, October 2, 2024, it is essential to remember that each Batik design carries its own unique philosophy and message. Among the many Batik styles found across Indonesia, we celebrate ten selected designs: Batik Megamendung, Batik Sogan, Batik Parang, Batik Kawung, Batik Truntum, Batik Sido Asih, Batik Buketan, Batik Ulamsari Mas, Batik Lasem, and Batik Sekar Jagad—each with distinct characteristics and symbolism. One design worth highlighting is Batik Sekar Jagad from Solo and Yogyakarta. The name "Sekar Jagad" comes from the Dutch word "kaart" (map) and the Javanese word "jagad" (world), symbolizing a "map of the world." This pattern reflects Indonesia's longstanding embrace of cultural diversity and unity, inviting all to appreciate the beauty of differences. Happy National Batik Day! His passion for law goes far beyond material success or professional status – it has always been about the work itself. His popular saying, "It's not about the marbles, but the game," reflects his belief that true success in law comes from a genuine love for the work and finding joy in the process – whether it’s research or assisting clients – rather than being motivated solely by financial rewards. Having spent much of his youth as a social justice activist and contributing to the improvement of Indonesia's legal system, Bang Nono is an exemplary figure and an inspiration to young lawyers who seek more than just material success in their careers. He firmly believes that the less glamorous but invaluable rewards – learning, wisdom, growth, confidence and even handling failure – are just as important.
