A group of 60 Drew Network Asia young lawyers (DNA-Y) from our network came together on Tuesday, 23 July 2024 to attend an online training workshop on “How to Shift Your Performance from High to Sustainable for Greater Profitability”, conducted by Executive Leadership Mentor, Grant Herbert. This workshop covered the steps and strategies of how to increase performance without burning out and maximise productivity, develop a healthy resilience, maintain mental readiness and exceed billable hours targets. On July 16th, 2024, our Partners, Reagan Roy and Heru Mardijarto, participated as speakers in the seminar on "AI, Data Use and Cybersecurity: Developments in Asia and Beyond" along with other Drew Network Asia Partners in Singapore. Our Partner, Reagan Roy, shared some insights on the legal developments in data use and cross-border transfers. The session provided an overview of the legal requirements in various ASEAN jurisdictions, focusing on the ASEAN data protection landscape and upcoming development across the region. In the next session, our Partner, Heru Mardijarto, shared some insights on data breach management. The session addressed the challenges companies face during multi-jurisdictional data breaches, covering notification requirements and strategic considerations for effective response coordination across ASEAN region. Our Partner, Reagan Roy Teguh, has authored an article titled, “Is Your Brand Well-Known In Another Country?” in Mondaq, providing advice from his perspective on protecting trademarks in foreign markets.   Growing a brand or trademark internationally requires a substantial effort and investment. While one brand may be well-known in its home country, its recognition abroad can be different. Indonesian law offers protection for well-known trademarks even if they are not registered locally but certain determination factors need to be observed. Applications for the protection of trademarks similar to well-known ones can be rejected, and legal action can be taken to protect the mark. Last week, we at Makarim & Taira S. had the pleasure of hosting the Doncaster & North Lindsey Colleges Group (DN Colleges Group), a leading education provider from South Yorkshire, Greater Lincolnshire, and the Humber, including Doncaster College and North Lindsey College, as part of their visit to Indonesia organized by BritCham Indonesia. The group came to our office, observed and learnt about the life of a lawyer. Our Partner Lia Alizia, Senior Associate Budhy Apriastuti Evita, and Associate Tara Nadianti Kasih shared valuable insights about the law firm business by explaining the tasks lawyers undertake, how they perform their responsibilities and the reasons why their work is needed in the legal field. Additionally, the group learned about the intricacies of doing business in Indonesia, and thereby gained a comprehensive understanding of the legal and regulatory landscape that influences business operations in this country.

We are still riding the wave of excitement from our successful World Law Group (WLG) Summit events held in the breathtaking paradise of Bali last month. On June 13, 2024, we gathered at AYANA Midplaza Jakarta in Jakarta for an insightful event titled "Challenges in Arbitration Enforcement: Insights from Singapore and Indonesia," a collaboration between Makarim & Taira S., BritCham Indonesia and Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). The event kicked off with welcoming remarks from Chris Wren, the Executive Director of BritCham, and maria sagrado, the Managing Partner of Makarim & Taira S. On June 10th 2024, two of our Partners at Makarim & Taira S., Frederick Simandjuntak and Heru Mardijarto, along with Senior Associate Made Susanti, served as panelists at a seminar for Korean companies on trends in investment-related laws and regulations in Indonesia and Malaysia. The event was hosted by Bae, Kim & Lee LLC (BKL) and the Korea Trade-Investment Agency (KOTRA) in Seoul, Korea.   Frederick Simanjuntak discussed foreign investment in Indonesia and global minimum tax, Heru Mardijarto provided insights on data protection, and Made Susanti spoke about employment termination.   We thank BKL, KOTRA and everyone involved in this event. In particular, a special thank you to the participants.
