Bridging the gap between producers and consumers.

About us

In 1996, a number of leading agri-food businesses identified the need for an independent body to provide the general public with information and education on the importance of agriculture and food to the Irish economy. As a result, Agri Aware was founded in 1996 by the Irish Farmers' Association (IFA), FBD, Bord Bia, the Irish Farmers’ Journal and Ornua. Agri Aware is a charitable trust that is funded by the farming and agri-food industry. The mission statement of Agri Aware is to 'improve the image and understanding of Agriculture, Farming and the Food industry among the general public'. Objectives of Agri Aware • To improve the image of the agriculture, farming and food industries • To promote greater awareness among the non-farming community of modern agriculture, the rural environment, animal welfare, food quality and safety • To heighten farmer awareness of the importance of best farming practices in the protection of the environment, animal welfare and food safety • To provide information about agriculture and food in schools nationwide to inform the non-farming community about the crucial role that the farming and agri-food industry play in the Irish economy Family Farm An acre of fun representing an island of farming in Ireland! Family Farm is a purpose built interactive acre that represents modern Irish farm life and is integral to communicating the importance of Irish agriculture to over 1 million visitors each year. The development of Family Farm was supported by the IFA, Bord Bia, FBD, IFAC and Dublin Zoo. At Family Farm, visitors can learn about farm animals, food origin and quality. In the farmyard itself, visitors will learn about the animals, from cows to chickens, while in the Farmhouse classroom, Ireland's agricultural history comes to life in the Farm's heritage exhibition, complete with touch screens, photographs and video footage.

Agri Aware is thrilled to announce the launch of the Environmental Innovators Programme for Transition Year students for the 2024/25 academic year. In collaboration with BiOrbic, Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre, this programme offers students a unique opportunity to engage with the pressing challenges facing our global food system and bioeconomy. Students are encouraged to develop and present innovative solutions that can help address these challenges. Last year, over 9,000 students participated, bringing forward incredible ideas to tackle these issues. As we look ahead to the upcoming year, we are excited to expand and enhance the programme with changes to its duration and format. We can't wait to see the creativity and ingenuity that students will bring to their presentations this year.

This week, we successfully wrapped up our farm safety demonstrations at two fantastic events: the Virginia Show and the Dualla Show. We were thrilled to engage with the public and raise awareness about the importance of farm safety. At the Virginia Show, we had the opportunity to discuss our ‘Safe Farm Futures’ programme and showcase ‘The Farm is Not a Playground’ display. It was fantastic to see so many attendees eager to learn about creating safer farm environments for themselves and their families. At the Dualla Show, we took things up a notch with live demonstrations on critical safety topics, including: - Identifying blind spots around tractors - Protecting yourself and others while operating machinery - Essential safety measures when driving quad bikes, such as wearing a helmet and not carrying additional passengers We’re proud to contribute to the ongoing conversation about farm safety and look forward to continuing our efforts to make farms safer for everyone.

Agri Aware is excited to announce our "Intro to Ag" programme, developed in partnership with Laois/Offaly ETB. This pilot programme will be rolled out in the LOETB schools in 2024/2025. Building Agricultural literacy is our single most important priority in Agri Aware and programmes like this will help to open up the agricultural sector particularly to those from a non farming background. Launched at the Tullamore show, we aim to challenge the recent fall in numbers taking up leaving cert Ag science by introducing students in transition year to the subject, giving them a flavour for the potential curriculum learnings and subsequently the many career opportunities that are available from studying Agricultural related courses at third level. Special thanks to Minister McConalogue for taking the time out of his schedule to launch this programme.

Agri Aware is thrilled to announce the launch of our "Intro to Ag" programme, in collaboration with Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board This programme, introduced yesterday at the Tullamore Show, aims to bridge the gap in Transition Year education and spark interest in agricultural science among students. At the Junior Cycle level, students have the chance to explore a variety of subjects, from languages to hands-on skills like woodwork and metalwork. However, Agricultural Science has been a notable exception, leaving students without exposure until the Senior Cycle, if they choose it as an optional subject. We are excited to pilot "Intro to Ag," a short course designed to introduce both students and teachers to agricultural science early on. We hope to inspire the next generation to engage with the agricultural sector. Thank you to Charlie McConalogue who helped us launch the event yesterday and everyone who made this programme possible.

Farm Safety Week, an initiative run by the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies) and Irish Farmers Association, ran last week and was a huge success. Our "Safety in Every Field" campaign gave Agri Aware an opportunity to showcase best practices in terms of safety on farms, featuring real people who deal with these risks every day. We were delighted to kick off the week with our chairman, Shay Galvin, followed by Martin Heydon, who described Farm Safety Week as the perfect opportunity for families to sit down and discuss where the risks are on their farms. We were thrilled to have many talented farmers and agri-businesses record and showcase their farm safety tips. Many thanks to all who contributed their time to the "Safety in Every Field" campaign. Agri Aware were also delighted to attend the Irish Farmers Journal Open Day at Tullamore Farm last Tuesday to demonstrate tractor safety further emphasizing the importance of farm safety.

June was an eventful month for Agri Aware, starting with Bord Bia Bloom, where we hosted 400 of our Incredible Edibles students for a tour of the farmyard, educating them about Irish agriculture. The weekend featured activities such as milking and shearing demonstrations along with panel discussions on a range of different topics. Our Open Farm event brought the Agri Aware team to Monasterevin, Co. Kildare, where the Byrne family welcomed 450 primary school students to their dairy farm to learn about Irish agriculture and food production. On Saturday the farm opened to the public and welcomed 2,550 visitors to explore the farm and participate in a range of activities. Another highlight was the Safe Farm Futures prize-giving day at Kyle Park National School in Co. Tipperary, celebrating their fantastic submission that won the whole school prize. We wrapped up June at Flavours of Fingal where Agri Aware had their first farm safety display that demonstrated the importance of farm safety as we head into the busy season.
