What would your public speaking anxiety chart look like? 📈 Our Talent4BBI ESRs are in sunny Valencia this week for their summer training schools hosted by ADM Food and Beverage Corporation. As the researchers are mid-way through their PhDs, they were given the opportunity to present on their work, whether that be project progress, conferences attended, public engagement activities or even how anxious they might be feeling giving their presentation right now! The agenda also included a visit to the ADM pilot plant to view how food and beverage innovations are scaled up from the lab to industry. 🔬 🍲 Well done to our ESRs for their progress so far and hope you enjoy the rest of the trip 🇪🇸 ! #bioeconomy #talent4bbi

Nobody should work for free! (Unless its vital services such as care and community work 🙄...) That is the kind of economic model we are in because of what we have valued in the past. "In the battle between the market and the state we lost the household and the commons." Yet aren't these areas (where we often give our free time out of love for each other and our environment) also the ones that could help keep us in the doughnut? Where both our social needs and nature are taken care of? It was so inspiring to hear Kate Raworth, author of Doughnut Economics 🍩 explain her groundbreaking model. It's the mark of a true revolutionary when complex sectors such as the economy can be broken down into such seemingly simple ideas for even the likes of me to understand! Kate explained that we need to move from a linear, growth focused economy to a circular one that thrives within each boundary the way nature does. We need to switch from a divisive economy that benefits a few to a distributive economy that benefits all. After the talk we separated into groups and shared ideas of how this model could help us improve things in Ireland. My idea was this - if a four day work week has been successfully trialled in several contexts, perhaps that fifth day could be better spent? What if we were paid by companies to spend that fifth day contributing to the two undervalued sectors of the economy we really need more focus on - the household and the commons? Would you like to be paid to spend one day a week helping create bee habitats in your city 🐝 ? Or teaching new skills to members of your community 🎓 ? I know I would! In Ireland wool is classified as 'waste' 🐑 🗑 . Farmers spend more money shearing it than they earn selling it. Springwool wants to change that. Through research and innovation, Springwool will explore ways wool can become a valuable product, including streams such as compost, wastewater treatment and biorefining. BiOrbic researchers Yuanyuan Chen and Fionnuala Murphy will cover the biorefinery and life cycle analysis sections of the project which had its kick-off meeting today.

On Wed 4th Sept, Farm Zero C at Shinagh Estates open's its doors to the public to share the latest innovations in establishing a carbon neutral dairy farm. This is our second open day after a successful event in 2022 where over 600 people attended. Thanks to Airfield Estate for hosting us on the last day of our #GenerationGlas youth sustainability ambassador training programme. Today we learned about systems thinking and the impact that one person's actions can have. Our young ambassadors presented their community event ideas to their peers, gave each other feedback, and explored Airfield's sustainable farm and gardens. Over the next few months, the ambassadors will develop and implement their event ideas. Keep an eye out for Generation Glas youth-led community events in Cork, Dublin, and Tipperary!
