Ber Mulcahy once again drew the crowds this year with 220 delegates at her 7th Annual Mindfulness Conference 2024. The theme was Mindful Values Based Leadership with nominated charity Peter McVerry Trust National Housing and Homelessness Charity. Harry Canning, CEO BSHC Chaired the morning session and delivered the Opening Address. Harry entertained the delegates sharing anecdotes and video clips on the difference between men and women’s brains, however having humoured the audience Harry brought them to a very mindful recognition of the legacy and leadership the Sisters of Bon Secours have given us for the past 200 years as they celebrate the Bicentenary of Bon Secours Congregation this year. Harry shared with the audience “he knew the day he started working for Bon Secours he had joined a values based organisation”. Ber Mulcahy, Director of Nursing introduced the day and shared how we need to have self-awareness and how our personal value systems drive how we can influence and be influenced in leadership. Ber closed with the words of Maya Angelou “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. Mr Chris Ruane, former MP for Vale of Clwyd Wales Oxford Mindfulness Centre discussed how Mindfulness drives political values-based leadership and shared how mindfulness was introduced in the UK Parliament. Fr Peter McVerry Founder of Peter McVerry Trust spoke to the audience on how values-based leadership can play a part in protecting the vulnerable in society. Fr McVerry ambition is for “his organisation, a homeless charity to go out of business, where one day we will have a society where there is no need for homeless charities in a country awash with money”. Nollaig Crowley, Business Manager BSHC Chaired the session after morning coffee. Dr Andy Phillips, REO HSE Southwest spoke on how having values-based leadership in Healthcare is not only a mindful choice but a kindful choice and shared how Kindfullness along with Mindfulness being kind in daily acts in the HSE can benefit everyone. Dr Deirdre O’Mahony, Consultant Oncologist BSHC spoke on power of mindful values in care delivery. Dr O’Mahony echoed Ber Mulcahy earlier words of “advocating that self-awareness and awareness of each other” and how self-awareness can be positive for colleagues and patients alike. Dr Martin Egan, Executive Leadership Coach explained how corporate success is possible when values and goals align mindfully giving examples of how individual values and corporate values, when aligned, can result in desired benefits for an organisation. Our day was finished with a closing address from Professor Patricia Leahy-Warren, Dean of the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing & Midwifery at University College Cork. Professor Leahy succinctly summarised each of the speakers for the day and congratulated Ber Mulcahy on the success of her 7th Mindfulness Conference.
