During our research, we've identified three crucial themes to the success of deep tech ventures: 1. 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: Our research has shown that deep tech entrepreneurs require a unique skillset to succeed. Skills in areas such as technology management, business development and regulatory understanding were highlighted as essential. 2. 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The study highlighted multiple barriers that hinder the transition of deep tech innovations from research to market. Market fragmentation presents a major challenge, as differences in global markets and regulatory environments make it difficult to align products across regions. Funding constraints also pose a significant obstacle, particularly in securing investment to move from proof of concept to commercialisation. 3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: Interviews and literature strongly underscored the importance of tailored support mechanisms designed specifically for deep tech ventures. Conventional incubation models often fail to address the unique challenges these startups face. Instead, collaborative ecosystems involving academia, industry, and government were identified as essential for providing the resources, networks, and mentorship needed to accelerate deep tech growth. dap hartmann, Associate Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Delft University of Technology, shares valuable insights on deep tech commercialisation in a recent interview. Known for his course "𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬," Hartmann guides students in evaluating the commercial potential of TU Delft’s patented inventions, emphasising the unique challenges of deep tech startups. Hartmann highlights the importance of interdisciplinary teams, where diverse perspectives shift the focus from technical details to market potential. He stresses the need to balance technical expertise with business acumen, often requiring team members who can think beyond the technology itself. Building networks with domain experts is crucial, as deep tech fields like AI evolve rapidly. He says, “𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘶𝘱𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘴 𝘋𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘺, 𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘈𝘐. Deep tech is solving some of the world’s toughest problems, but it’s not without its challenges. Two big ones stand out: communication and collaboration. Explaining complex tech in simple terms is key to winning over investors and customers. And because deep tech often requires a mix of expertise, building teams that combine technical and domain knowledge is crucial to solving real-world problems. But there’s another challenge: talent. Europe, for example, struggles to retain skilled professionals, with many drawn to global hubs like the U.S. and Asia. Plus, founding teams often lack the business know-how to scale their innovations effectively. The solution to that would be stronger collaboration between academia and industry. By working together, we can bridge gaps, nurture talent, and ensure Deep Tech innovations make a real impact. Our team has been exploring the challenges and opportunities in deep tech commercialisation, especially within European universities. We wanted to understand how we can better support deep tech ventures as they move from the lab to the market. Jose Villagran, Deputy Manager of R&D Projects at UIIN, has written an article about this, and it is featured in our e-zine. This article delves into the methodology and key findings from our research, providing valuable insights for stakeholders across academia, industry, and government. Deep Technology, or “Deep Tech,” refers to organisations, institutions, or startups focused on creating advanced technological solutions to tackle societal challenges. These entities invest heavily in research and undergo lengthy development cycles to transform cutting-edge scientific or engineering discoveries into innovative products or services that can make an impact.
