It’s been a busy time of the year for us at Education for Sustainability! As we enter the midterm break, hundreds of students across Ireland have just wrapped up our 8-week climate literacy modules. A massive congratulations to all of the students and staff who have completed our modules this term and improved sustainable attitudes in their schools. 👏 After engaging with a host of topics, including climate justice, fast fashion, the plastic crisis and biodiversity, students apply their learnings to a hands-on action project to promote sustainable values. Below are some photos of some students working on action projects and learning activities. Activities include: 🌟upcycling, to show that fashion can be slowed down and items can be reused, 🌟plastic collection and discussion, to promote recycling and ask students to pay attention to where our rubbish goes, 🌟action planning, to launch projects to increase sustainability and better the planet, 🌟and more! ♻️ If you want to stay updated on what we’re up to, or find out more about our programs, follow us on social media @educ4sustain on all platforms. 🍃

🌍 Exciting times ahead as we deliver 20 Circular Economy & Fast Fashion workshops in schools across Waterford and Dublin, funded by @Waterford County Council and @Dublin City Council! These workshops are more than just lessons—they’re equipping students with the knowledge and skills to understand the impact of fast fashion and how we can move towards a more sustainable, circular economy. From creative upcycling activities to eye-opening discussions on the future of fashion, these sessions are making students think critically about the choices we make. A key element of these workshops is peer education, where students teach each other. This not only reinforces their learning but also empowers them to lead change within their own communities. It’s amazing to see young people taking ownership of such important topics! By fostering these skills today, we’re preparing students for a more sustainable future 🌱♻️. #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #FastFashion #EducationForTheFuture #PeerEducation #Waterford #Dublin #YouthLeadership #EnvironmentalEducation

Founded to inspire young people to understand, conserve, and love nature, our work in schools focuses on fostering a deep connection with the natural world. Through nature education, citizen science, and hands-on classes that explore biodiversity, we aim to equip students with the knowledge and passion to protect the planet for future generations. https://lnkd.in/eM2BM975

A 73% decline in global wildlife populations in just 50 years 🦍 🐅 This devastating figure from the WWF’s Living Planet Report 2024 is a sobering reminder that our planet is approaching dangerous tipping points. With nature loss and climate change converging, the threats to biodiversity—and ultimately humanity—are becoming more urgent. I vividly recall attending WWF's Living Planet Report launch at London Zoo in 2018, where the global wildlife population had already declined by 60% between 1970 and 2014. Six years later, the loss has surged to 73%. This accelerating decline is heart-breaking, but it truly hit home when my daughter watched a video WWF's report video and, near tears, asked me, "What will we do if there are no animals in the future? Why won’t my children see them?" Her question underscores the importance of education and direct experience with nature. As Sir David Attenborough once said, "If children don’t grow up knowing about nature and appreciating it, they won’t understand it. And if they don’t understand it, they won’t protect it." My own love for nature—and my experience working at Dublin Zoo—led me to start Education for Sustainability. The goal was simple: to inspire young people to care about the natural world, because only when they care will they be driven to protect it. As we face these growing challenges, we must prioritise reconnecting with nature and fostering a deep sense of stewardship in future generations. There is still time to turn the tide, but we must act now. #Biodiversity #Sustainability #ClimateAction #LivingPlanetReport #YouthEducation #NatureConservation WWF National Biodiversity Data Centre https://lnkd.in/ebjfPV47

At Education for Sustainability, we believe that education is the cornerstone of a sustainable future. The recent EPA report highlights how much work still needs to be done to meet Ireland’s emissions targets, and we see this as a call to action. Our goal is to advance climate literacy across Ireland, equipping schools, businesses, and communities with the knowledge to make impactful changes. We urge policymakers to support this mission by expanding funding opportunities, especially for educational institutions, so that every sector can contribute to our climate goals. 🌍 #ClimateAction #ClimateEducation #Sustainability #PolicyChange #EmpowerCommunities

The latest EPA report is a wake-up call: Ireland is not on track to meet its emissions targets, and it’s clear we need a more comprehensive approach to addressing our climate goals. While there has been significant progress in some sectors, we are still falling short. One critical area that often goes overlooked is education. To foster meaningful and lasting change, we need to empower individuals, communities, and businesses with the knowledge and tools to make sustainable choices. Climate education should be integrated at every level — in schools, workplaces, and local communities. This isn't just a supplementary approach; it is an essential investment in our future. It’s disheartening to see that many government grants, including those supporting the Circular Economy, often exclude schools and educational institutions. If we are serious about reducing emissions and building a sustainable future, this needs to change. Our schools play a foundational role in shaping tomorrow's leaders, and they should have equal access to funding and resources to drive climate literacy and action. I urge policymakers and stakeholders to rethink how we fund and prioritise climate education. Together, let’s build a future where every sector, starting with education, is empowered to take bold steps toward sustainability. 🌍 📚#ClimateAction #Sustainability #ClimateEducation #CircularEconomy #SustainableFuture #ClimateLiteracy #EducationForAll #GreenTransition #PolicyChange #ClimateCrisis #InvestInEducation #NetZero

At Education for Sustainability, we believe that learning goes far beyond the classroom! This week, St Andrews students took part in a fantastic Citizen Science project in collaboration with Coastwatch Europe as part of the All-Ireland Survey. We spent the morning on the local beach exploring biodiversity, examining litter, and investigating inflows. The hands-on experience gave our students the chance to connect with nature, understand real-world environmental challenges, and contribute to meaningful data collection efforts that support coastal conservation. 🌱🐚 Experiences like these teach our students the power of education through practical work. By stepping outside, they not only see the beauty and importance of our natural ecosystems, but also realise their own role in protecting them. A huge thank you to Coastwatch for the opportunity to engage in this inspiring initiative. Together, we’re fostering the next generation of environmental stewards! 💚 #CitizenScience #EnvironmentalEducation #CoastwatchEurope #AllIrelandSurvey #Biodiversity #LitterSurvey #PracticalLearning #OutdoorEducation #BeachConservation #FutureStewards Coastwatch ( Irish Coastal Environment Group - Coastwatch) Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications Department of Education — Ireland
