Did you know that radiation occurs naturally at low levels in the Irish environment – in soil, water, air and in our food? ☢️ The EPA carries out testing to make sure that the levels of radiation in our food is within safe limits. One way we do this is with a mixed diet sample - essentially a big tray of mixed food from a cafeteria, which we blend and dry for analysis. Warning, it's not the most appetising! Watch the video for a behind the scenes look at how we do this testing in our Dublin lab. You can find out more on the EPA website: https://lnkd.in/eexnEYH8

The EPA hydrology bulletin for February is now available to download. Long term hydrometric records are essential for informing the sustainable use of our water resources. This month, a snapshot of how we monitor groundwater levels for this report. The EPA monitors groundwater levels at over 90 locations across the country. Groundwater levels are recorded every 15 minutes by dataloggers at each site. EPA staff calibrate the dataloggers regularly to ensure accuracy. Groundwater levels increased in February when compared to January, but 43% of groundwater levels were in the normal long-term range. In the rest of the report: Rainfall varied from wet in the south to relatively dry in the midlands and north. The monthly average river flows and lake levels increased in February when compared to January; however, most remained in or below the normal long-term range. 57% of river flows were in the normal long-term range, while 51% of lake and turlough monitoring stations were below the long-term normal range. Event! 📅 How do we transform at the scale, speed and depth necessary to achieve a just and sustainable world? In this talk, Karen O'Brien will present some key insights from the recent Transformative Change Assessment from IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services). She’ll explore how these findings can be used to simultaneously address climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution in a just and sustainable manner. Drawing on assessment’s key messages, Karen will elaborate on what each of us can do to promote and accelerate transformative change – emphasizing that what we do and how we do it matters more than we think. Ella McSweeney will chair the event. This lecture takes place at 7pm on March 26th online via teams. Imeacht! Conas is féidir linn athrú ag an scála, an luas agus an méid atá riachtanach chun domhan cóir inbhuanaithe a bhaint amach? Sa chaint seo, cuirfidh Karen O’Brien roinnt príomhléargais i láthair ón Measúnú Athraithe Bunathraitheach le déanaí ó IPBES (Ardán Beartais-Eolaíochta Idir-Rialtasach ar Bhithéagsúlacht agus Seirbhísí Éiceachórais). Fiosróidh sí conas is féidir na torthaí seo a úsáid chun aghaidh a thabhairt go comhuaineach ar athrú aeráide, ar chaillteanas bithéagsúlachta agus ar thruailliú ar bhealach cóir agus inbhuanaithe. Agus leas a bhaint as príomhtheachtaireachtaí an mheasúnaithe, déanfaidh Karen mionléiriú ar cad is féidir le gach duine againn a dhéanamh chun athrú bunathraitheach a chur chun cinn agus a luathú – agus béim a chur ar an bhfíric a bhfuil níos mó tábhachta ag baint leis an méid a dhéanaimid agus an chaoi a ndéanaimid é ná mar a cheapann muid. Ella McSweeney a bheidh ina cathaoirleach ar an imeacht. Beidh an léacht seo ar siúl ag 7pm an 26 Márta ar líne trí Teams. Cláraigh saor in aisce: https://lnkd.in/ekjeAtYr

There has been a welcome reduction in nitrogen levels in rivers in 2024. The Early Insights Nitrogen Indicator for 2024, published by the EPA, shows that nitrogen levels in rivers have reduced in 2024. Despite this, nitrogen remains too high in the southeastern half of the country and further reductions will be needed to bring them to satisfactory levels. Agriculture is the primary source of nitrogen in our waters. Significant actions are underway by the sector to reduce nitrogen losses. Ongoing and sustained actions will be needed to reduce nutrient levels so that the ecological health of our waters can improve.
