As the new EU legislative cycle gets underway, the Food Drink Ireland Director Paul Kelly and Deputy Director Linda Stuart-Trainor, along with colleagues from Drinks Ireland, Dairy Industry Ireland and Meat Industry Ireland, travelled to Brussels last week for a series of meetings. They met with Damien Flynn, Head of the Agriculture Section at Ireland's Permanent Representation to the EU, and members of his team, to discuss key current and future issues for Ireland's agri-food sector. They also took part in a number of events at the Ibec Brussels Office, including the launch of 'Competitive Business, Competitive Europe: Irish Business EU Policy Priorities for 2024-2029' with Commissioner-designate Michael McGrath. Yesterday, Ibec launched our Irish Business EU Policy Priorities for 2024-2029, ‘Competitive Business, Competitive Europe’, at an event in our Brussels office with our sectoral trade associations bringing together over 150 key stakeholders and members.   We were delighted to engage with Commissioner-designate Michael McGrath, Ambassador Aingeal O'Donoghue, Ambassador Cait Moran, Members of the European Parliament, BusinessEurope, along with senior officials from Ireland's Permanent Representation of Ireland to the EU, the Council of the EU, the European Parliament and the European Commission. ‘Competitive Business, Competitive Europe’ sets out our vision for an EU that is focused on competitiveness, that unlocks the potential of the Single Market, that concentrates on EU added value, and that renews its commitment to openness. We want a more competitive EU that is a global leader in digital and AI transformation, supports innovation, leads in clean energy and is sustainable into the future.    The renewal of the EU institutions and Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2026 offer opportunities to strengthen our influence and to realise our vision for the EU. FDI's final policy priority for 2024 is Export markets – international trade /Brexit response. With exports of over €16 billion in 2023 and deep linkages to the wider economy, Ireland's food and drink sector is central to Ireland's economic performance. Our 2024 policy priority for export markets include introducing trade support measures such as export trade financing and a state supported export credit insurance scheme. There is a need to introduce additional funding for marketing and trade promotion both for companies looking to access new markets and for the state agencies such as Bord Bia and Enterprise Ireland that support the export growth ambition of the sector. Finally a constant priority is to continue to advance international market access for Irish food and drink. These are just some of the vital supports needed to maintain our Irish footprint within the food and drinks sector globally for 2024 and beyond. Our fifth policy priority looks at the area of Food Safety and Nutrition. This is always a priority for our sector. Creating and maintaining safe and nutritious food and drinks is a core value within all our member companies. To make sure this continues as a priority for 2024 and the future we have asked stakeholders to ensure appropriate focus is maintained on food safety within the context of sustainability developments and innovations and to ensure improved coherence of policies for food, health and nutrition across Government, based on solid science and evidence.
