Welcome to FRED! The Food Resource Efficiency Decision Support Hub. The FRED project is all about understanding our #FoodSystems in Ireland so that we can make better decisions around the food systems that we support in the future. We're aiming to understand the true #social, #economic and #environmental impacts of the food supply chains that we engage with. With that, we can co-create solutions, along with stakeholders from the entire supply chain, to make sure that the FRED Support Hub can recommend solutions that meet everyone's needs. If you'd like to be involved in our needs analysis, and would like to be contacted for a 30-minute interview, drop us a message! We're funded by Science Foundation Ireland under the Future Food Systems Challenge. Focusing of the future of our food system and preventing food waste.
About us
Food is at the core of sustaining human life but is a resource that is wasted at immense cost to society. Simultaneously, food insecurity is experienced by 9% of the Irish population. Currently, over a third of food is being wasted but the Irish Government, European Commission and United Nations targets all aim to half food waste by 2030. There is also a strong business case for reducing food loss and waste (FLW) to deliver a net positive return. Local and international research shows that numerous isolated solutions can address individual causes of FLW singularly at the specific step of the food supply chain where they are experienced, however, as reasons for FLW are interlinked and systemic, it is necessary to utilize a total value network approach. The FRED-Support hub aims to take this exact approach via a method known as Agent-Based Modelling to better understand the entire food supply chain in its many forms, including the real local impact of a solution, or combination of solutions. The project will involve a food system stakeholder collaboration network, a co-created, open-access FLW intervention database, an interactive FLW impact evaluator and a digital FLW prevention support hub. This project is funded under the SFI Future Food Systems Challenge and is a collaboration between MTU Kerry (lead partner), UCD (co-lead) and FoodCloud (Societal Champion).

Had a great time at Wild Mind over the weekend. Lots of lovely people and lots of learning :) We gave a talk about the Circular Economy and I gave my thoughts on our food systems and the work we’re doing as part of FRED - Food Resource Efficiency Decision Support Hub. Thanks to my colleagues below, and to all the organisers!
🌊 We had a fantastic day yesterday at the Wild Mind festival in Fenit. 🌱The festival is a celebration of our natural environment, nestled between the Kerry mountains and the Wild Atlantic Ocean it holds space for people to engage with the local environment, to learn about our wildlife systems and to open our minds to potential for change our planet so desperately needs. Cluster manager Catriona Power FRSA along with colleagues Jennifer Attard Eve Savage & David Williamson from Circular Bioeconomy Research Group (CIRCBIO) IKC3 - Ireland's Knowledge Centre for Carbon, Climate and Community Action at Munster Technological University were invited to speak about Circular Economy and provide insights from working with businesses and communities across Ireland and share opportunities for the audience to engage with our programmes and projects.

We're hard-pressed to think of any #Irish farmer who won't be happy to see the forecast of drier and warmer weather over the next few days! There are a lot of jobs to be done in every sector that have been delayed too long. On the FRED project we are also getting ready for our next food system sustanability workshop, this time focusing on #farmers in all animal production sectors: #poultry (#meat and #eggs), #pigs, #beef #cattle, #dairy #cows, #sheep and #goats. This workshop will take place on May 7th on the Munster Technological University #Kerry campus, and comes as the third in our series of food systems stakeholder workshops (see more in the article below). All poultry and #livestock farmers are welcome, transport can be covered on request - check with PI Jennifer Attard for that. https://lnkd.in/egiYeiud Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre Circular Bioeconomy Research Group (CIRCBIO) Efficient Food Project FoodCloud University College Dublin UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science Earth Institute Science Foundation Ireland Circular Bioeconomy Cluster South-West IKC3 - Ireland's Knowledge Centre for Carbon, Climate and Community Action Simon Patterson, Tamara Hochstrasser, Angela Ruttledge, Tracey O., Pablo Lucas CAP Network Ireland Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Is Food waste getting you down? Get involved! In 2022, the world wasted 1.05 billion tonnes of food. While 783 million people are hungry, we waste 1 billion meals a day, at a cost of $1 trillion a year - UNEP's Food Waste Index Report 2024 - https://lnkd.in/euj2VKxZ The report, published yesterday, makes it clear that food waste is a system wide issue and that is why the approach of the FRED - Food Resource Efficiency Decision Support Hub project is so necessary. FRED focuses on supporting food resource efficiency across the Irish food chain. Interested in getting involved? 📢 Are you a Livestock or Poultry Farmer? 🐐 🐏 🐖 🐄 🐔 You are invited to a food system research workshop: Tuesday 7th May 2PM – 4PM // MTU Kerry, North Campus, HCT Building Room J206 - Network with other #Farmers and #Businesses - Share your business challenges & develop solutions with peers & the FRED research team Details here: https://lnkd.in/enCvHQi5 Register here: https://lnkd.in/e6JUfzZp Organised as part of the Science Foundation Ireland-funded FRED Project: Food Resource Efficiency Decision support with Munster Technological University (Dr Jennifer Attard, Dr Tracey O., Simon Patterson), University College Dublin (Dr Tamara Hochstrasser, Dr Pablo Lucas) and FoodCloud (Angela Ruttledge). On national #stopfoodwasteday we are more aware than ever of the incredible volume of food that is wasted (up to 40% of food produced for human consumption!) while 783 million people experienced chronic hunger in 2023, and the wasted resource inputs and business investment, and avoidable climate impacts and ecological damage that are part of the journey of wasted food. At the same time, we are so impressed by the diverse food system stakeholders we have met with since the beginning of the #FRED project, and their interest and ideas for preventing #foodwaste in #Ireland. We are making final preparations for our #foodsystems sustainability workshop in #Kerry on Monday with #businesses involved in #fruit and #vegetable #growing, #fishing and #foodservice and #hospitality. If you are in a #foodbusiness we would love to hear from you - get in touch or come along to one of our workshops to collaborate with other businesses within and outside your sector and work together to #stopfoodwaste.
