Last week we were in Cork attending B Lab Ireland's first B Corp event hosted by Climeaction, Otonomee, and Change by Degrees. We saw some great panellists doing excellent work in their industries. Seeing so much interest and action happening in the sustainability space was really encouraging! EirGrid's Winter Outlook 2023/24 Report. Why should you care? This report highlights EirGrid's capability to meet electricity demands during the winter and if you like the lights on, then this information can affect your access to electricity during periods of high demand and supply shortages. The Winter Outlook 2023/24 provides a detailed view of the upcoming winter, assessing the balance between electricity supply and demand. It's a proactive step to prepare for the months ahead. One key highlight is the Loss of Load Expectation (LOLE). It quantifies the risk of inadequate generation to meet instantaneous demand. EirGrid's standard is 8 hours per year, but the 2023/24 outlook reveals 21 hours, signifying a slightly higher risk level. However, this doesn't imply that consumers will experience outages. Robust measures, including emergency protocols and strategic partnerships, help mitigate potential disruptions. The past winter (2022/23) saw challenges with heavy reliance on wind and interconnection. With unpredictable weather patterns, maintaining system stability is a delicate balance. EirGrid is confident that a blackout solely due to insufficient generation is not on the horizon.
