The National Governing Body for the sport of field hockey in Ireland. Governing the 32 counties of Ireland.

About us

The Irish Hockey Association is the National Governing Body for the sport of field hockey in Ireland. Governing the 32 counties of Ireland, the Association is responsible for the management and overall development of all areas of the sport. The Association was formed in 2000, as a result of the merger of the two pre-existing Unions which governed men's and women's hockey separately. Both pre-existing Unions' origins date back to the late 19th Century, when they were formed within a year of each other. The IHA has a total of eight affiliated Branches that govern the sport at regional and local level. Separate Branches administer men's and women's hockey, although plans are being put in place to merge the sport at Branch level also, as is the case at national level. Five women's hockey Branches exist – Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Ulster and South East, with three men's hockey Branches existing in the form of Leinster, Munster and Ulster. The sport's approximate 168 clubs and 280 schools are affiliated to the IHA through its Branch network. The Irish Hockey Umpires Association, which manages the sport's umpire base, and the Irish Universities Hockey Association, which governs the sport in Ireland's university system, are also affiliated to the IHA.

All good things come to an end 🫡 A few weeks on from announcing my retirement from international hockey, I've had some time to reflect on what has been an incredible period in my life. Albeit, we as a team did not achieve our goal of getting back into the top flight of European hockey at the recent qualifiers on home soil. I look back on the last 14 years with immense pride and happiness. For every elite sportsperson, the journey is never straightforward nor easy, and it's full of ups and downs. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to represent my country from u16 right through to senior level. There has been some great moments, battles and victories that will live in the memory forever. What I'll cherish most are the memories and the friendships. So many different characters, personalities with a burning ambition to represent our country to the best of our abilities. I know I have said my thanks to my close support system but I can't express my gratitude and appreciation for everything they have done for me. To my wife, family, friends, clubs over the years, Hockey Ireland, Olympic Federation of Ireland, sponsors and of course my employer RSA Insurance Ireland, 123.ie and Intact. All of these amazing people allowed me to live my boyhood dream while balancing a career and everything else in between. Thank you doesn't seem enough 💚 Looking forward to supporting the boys from the other side of the fence. It's been an honour, a privilege and I am excited to see what the future holds ☘️

The HITV Early Adopters Season Pass - on sale starting this Friday 📺 🌏 Be a game-changer for Irish Hockey by becoming an a HITV ‘Season Pass’ Early Adopter. Early Adopters will be leading the visibility charge, directly contributing to the production of live and on-demand hockey games on HITV. Why become an Early Adopter? Hockey currently lags behind other sports when it comes to video content and ability to view in Ireland. The costs associated with live and on-demand video content production, as well as the infrastructure required to broadcast, creates a significant barrier to entry. HITV's new ‘Season Pass’ aims to overcome this, giving those who are invested in the sport of hockey a way to help us turn the dial. By contributing, early adopters will help raise the profile of our sport and put hockey in front of thousands more existing and prospective fans. For the past 12 months Hockey Ireland has been working to create a sustainable production and streaming model that addresses visibility while also ensuring the monies generated stay inside our sport and benefit its growth. These monies will be re-invested into increased and improved game coverage as well as being distributed back to the clubs to recognise their contribution to the platform.   The HITV Early Adopter ‘Season Pass’ will be available for purchase from this Friday ahead of Saturday's EY Hockey League Season start. Invest in the visibility of hockey with us.

EY Hockey League season 2024/2025 set to begin with Round 1 of Women’s Fixtures. The EY Hockey League, Ireland’s highest division of club hockey, returns this weekend with the Women’s competition beginning on Saturday, September 28. EY Ireland continues its support of the League, having been the primary sponsor of the Irish Hockey League since 2016 with the formation of the EY Hockey League and its subsequent expansion to feature a second tier in 2019. The competition has since become universally known as the EYHL, a measure of the intrinsic link between the sponsor and the competition and provides an elite domestic hockey competition on an equal basis for both male and female players. For the full story, and an exclusive look at the exciting additions for the 2024/25 season, head to hockey.ie for the full story. #EYHockeyLeague #EYHL #EveryGameCounts

"Go Mommy, Go!" echoes through the fence at Park Avenue, Rosbrien, Newtownards, and Harlequin Park every Saturday afternoon. These “Mommies" have earned a combined 738 international caps, competed in the Olympics, won a World Cup silver medal, and claimed numerous national league and cup championships. But perhaps now most importantly, are the mothers to 13 young children. Yet playing at this level is not without its challenges, especially when you add motherhood into the equation. In this exploratory piece, Irish International Sarah Hawkshaw met with six of the incredible mothers who continue to dominate our sport. On Sunday, Shane O'Donoghue officially announced that Ireland's Bronze medal match against Czechia, his 242nd, would be his last as an Irish Senior International. Since making his senior debut against Canada in 2011 at the age of 19, Shane has been a pivotal part of the Senior International set-up. His contribution helped the team win Bronze at the 2015 European Championships in London, qualify for the Rio 2016 & Paris 2024 Olympic Games and win gold at the 2023 EuroHockey Championship II in Dublin among many other international accolades such as a World Young Player of Year Nomination in 2015. Ireland's record international goalscorer with 125 goals, a title he achieved against England in the 2018 World Cup, Shane's unrelenting effort and commitment to Irish Hockey has helped to inspire thousands of young boys and girls across the country to follow in his footsteps. Thank you, Shane.
