The Pelagic Advisory Council held its annual General Assembly last week and a lot of work was carried out ! 🐟 The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) presented their advice for 2025 fishing opportunities, which led to the PelAC publishing its advice on fishing opportunities for 2025 (available on our website). ❗ We approved two letters on the Northeast Atlantic Mackerel stock: the first provides the PelAC's perspective to prepare the 2025 benchmark of the mackerel stock, and the second stresses the importance of the European Commission taking immediate action on the consistent oversetting of TAC by Coastal states (both letters are available on our website). 🔬 We approved a letter to the European Commission and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) requesting that a benchmark be carried out to address the mixing between Irish Sea and Celtic Sea herring. (available on our website) 💡 We established Working Group III, which will focus on implementing the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management #EAFM. Gonçalo Carvalho has been elected as WGIII Chair and will have the exciting task of steering the PelAC to the EAFM fishing grounds and land our advice to the Commission port! The first 'species' that WGIII will be targeting with the setting up of its own Focus group is fish welfare in pelagic fisheries. And yes, we sent a letter to the Commission to inform them ! (also available on our website) 👨💼& 👩💼 It was also election time ! Sean O'Donoghue, a founding member of the PelAC and former General Assembly and Executive Committee Chair, retired after 20 productive years of service with the PelAC. His contributions have been invaluable, and he will be missed as he embarks on this new chapter. We welcome our new PelAC Management Team: Esben Sverdrup - Jensen, former WGI Chair and CEO of the Danmarks Pelagiske Producentorganisation as PelAC Chair. Merel den Held, Project Leader at Stichting De Noordzee, has been elected as PelAC Vice-Chair. Dominic Rihan, CEO of the Killybegs Fishermens Organisation Ltd, will serve as PelAC WGI chair. Jérôme Jourdain Deputy Secretary General of the Union des Armateurs a la Peche de France, has been re-elected as WGII Chair. Gonçalo Carvalho, Oceans and Fisheries Activist at Sciaena, former PelAC Vice-Chair, has been elected as WGIII Chair. With these new appointments and ongoing efforts, the Pelagic Advisory Council is well-positioned to continue its mission of supporting sustainable pelagic fisheries management and engaging with key stakeholders across Europe. Next up in our CIBBRiNA Case Study (CS) spotlight is CS7, which focuses on minimising #bycatch of #seal, #shark and #cetacean species in pelagic trawl #fisheries across the Celtic Sea and Greater North Sea regions. These fisheries operate on a large scale, using fishing vessels ranging from 40 to 140 metres in length. CS7 is trialling various bycatch mitigation devices such as excluders, escape panels, and stop grids. These measures collectively work to keep the intended catch, while allowing other species, including #tuna, to swim freely out of the nets, and preventing larger #marine animals from becoming trapped. CS7 is also testing out pingers to help minimise #dolphin bycatch — acoustic devices that emit sounds to deter dolphins from approaching fishing nets. Trials at sea have been using cameras within fishing nets — to capture real-time footage of marine animals — as well as species recognition tools aboard #fishing boats to support fishers in identifying and recording any incidents of bycatch. So far, the measures are showing promising results! Learn more about our work with #European fisheries at: www.cibbrina.eu.

Preparing the KFO's new SafetyNet Technologies CatchCam on the Father McKee on the way south to the Albacore Tuna grounds. KFO members are using this new technology to monitor and improve gear performance and selectivity. It will also be used as part of our work in the pelagic trawl case study in the CIBBRiNA project, which is a cross-sectoral collaboration of the fishing industry, scientists, policymakers, environmental NGOs, and other key stakeholders working together to minimise bycatch of Endangered, Threatened and Protected (ETP) species in the North-East Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean. #sustainablefisheries

The “engine” of CIBBRiNA’s work to minimise #ETP species #bycatch, our eight case studies cover a rich variety of commercial #fishing methods, from small-scale to large-scale, using gear including gillnets, surface and deep-water longlines, pelagic and bottom trawls. These case studies are found across areas of the North-East Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean. Through collaborative research with these #fisheries, CIBBRiNA will produce new knowledge that is applicable across #Europe while at the same time designed with the specific contexts of different fishing operations in mind. Progress across the case studies is well underway, with CIBBRiNA partners already carrying out talks with #fishers and governments, applying for licences to carry out gear trials, obtaining mitigation devices and other equipment, and making trips out to sea. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be spotlighting each of the eight CIBBRiNA case studies, so keep an eye out! Find more information and sign up to our newsletter at: www.cibbrina.eu.
