At our Sunflower Ball we announced the appointment of our first Sarcoma Cancer Ireland Ambassador, Deirdre Lawlor. Deirdre is a sarcoma patient and founding Board Member who played an integral role in setting up our charity. She has recently retired from her board commitments so she can concentrate on her health, but we just couldn't let her go. Deirdre's role as Ambassador will allow her to stay involved in our work, but without the day to day responsibilities of running a charity. Please join us in congratulating Deirdre on her new role as a Sarcoma Cancer Ireland Ambassador! #SarcomaAwareness #Ambassador #PayItForward

As we close out Sarcoma Awareness Month- let’s not forget how important it is to amplify the voices of the sarcoma community so people diagnosed- from peds to adults- have access to more and better treatment options. I know I am committed. I hope you are too….🎗️🌻
This #SarcomaAwarenessMonth, CEO of OVAC member Sarcoma Foundation of America, Brandi Felser, reflects on the necessity of bringing awareness to this cancer and the nuanced challenges that come with the rarity of the disease. A cancer diagnosis is never easy. Rare cancers like sarcoma, however, bring additional challenges. A considerable challenge for sarcoma patients is that many people have never heard the word until their diagnosis. This makes raising awareness critically important to improve outcomes. July is Sarcoma Awareness Month, during which we amplify the needs of sarcoma patients and advocate for more research funding. I am privileged to raise awareness for sarcoma, a rare cancer that affects bone and connective soft tissue. Unlike more common cancers, sarcoma often remains in the shadows, leading to delayed diagnoses and limited treatment options. Sarcoma is a rare cancer of the bone or connective soft tissue, with over 130 subtypes. It accounts for about 1% of adult cancers and 15-20% of childhood cancers. In 2024, an estimated 18,000 people will be diagnosed with sarcoma, and 7,250 will lose their lives to this disease. Often developing deep within the body, sarcomas frequently show no signs until advanced stages. Most sarcoma subtypes do not have an FDA-approved therapy, and patients are often treated with outdated therapies. This leads to poor outcomes and an approximately 16% survival rate for patients with metastatic disease. Diagnosis can take months to years due to the rarity of the disease. Patients frequently struggle to find specialized healthcare providers, and the public's lack of understanding can make emotional support scarce. Most community clinicians see very few sarcoma patients and may lack the expertise or knowledge to treat sarcoma with the latest standards of care or research. Nor will they have up-to-date information about clinical trials. Receiving care at a designated sarcoma specialty center increases patient outcomes and improves quality of life. Yet, approximately 80% of sarcoma patients are treated in the community setting. Barriers include proximity to specialized centers, socioeconomic factors, and limited insurance. We are dedicated to improving outcomes for people diagnosed and living with sarcoma. Increased research funding and access to quality sarcoma care and innovative treatments are essential. By funding research, educating the public, providing resources, advocating on behalf of the community, and raising awareness, we can create change. I invite you to join me and the thousands of voices raising awareness about sarcoma during Sarcoma Awareness Month and beyond. Together, we can make a difference.
