About us

Seal Rescue Ireland (SRI) is a charity organisation that works around the clock to rescue, rehabilitate and release native seals found sick, injured or orphaned from across the coast of Ireland. As the only seal rescue centre within the Republic of Ireland, we respond to reports nationwide and aim to rehabilitate the pups back to full health so that they can be returned to the wild. SRI strives to promote ocean conservation and sustainability through proactive education, community engagement and research programmes, in order to protect our marine environment and all life within. 🚨ATTENTION🚨: Grey Seal Pup Alert! (Please Share!) Grey Seal Pupping Season runs from late August/Early September & throughout the winter months. Help us to protect our nursing Grey Seals & their pups! **If you are out on beaches over the coming months, please watch for our flippered friends in distress!** Remember: 👉Do not put the seal in the water. (Injured, sick & newborn pups are on land to rest, recover & grow - Grey Seal Pups with white lanugo coats like the one above cannot swim yet due to the weight of their fur!) 👉Do not touch pups: Seals are wild animals and WILL bite if stressed, human presence may lead to mothers abandoning otherwise healthy pups 👉 Do not disturb seals: Watch from a distance; 100-200 meters is advised! If a mother is close by watching, she may abandon her pup out of fear, if people are close to her pup. 👉Mothers leave their young on land, this is normal: Grey seal pups have white fur for the first 3 weeks and need to stay on land until they moult. Their white coat is too heavy to swim with. It is normal for the mother to leave them alone for 3-4 hours, she will return to nurse them if they are left undisturbed 👉Keep dogs on a lead and children at a distance for their safety. 👉Take photos - but please keep your distance: Photos are always helpful as they allow us to determine an animal's condition immediately, and if necessary, a rescue can be organised promptly 👉 Contact us for advice! If a pup is on its own with no mum in sight; obviously injured, or if you are unsure, please ring Seal Rescue Ireland for help and advice on 087 1955 393 A pup's best chance of survival is with their mum. While we can provide care for these pups nothing compares to a mother caring for & nursing her & providing that essential high fat content milk which is packed full of important antibodies that supports their immune system. You can help us to reduce the number of orphaned Grey pups by sharing this important information! Stay tuned for more updates and please click the link below if you would like to support our operation costs for this new rescue season. https://lnkd.in/eQP-4ZtT? 💙Thank you!💙

Meet Acorn Barnicle, Noctiluca, Furbellow and Coral Weed!🪸💙 Meet Acorn, a young male grey seal found alone after a fierce storm at Rathmoylan Cove, Co. Wexford, on October 6th. After a week of close watching, his weight started to drop, and with no sign of his mum, we brought him into our care. Acorn had a broken nail on his back flipper and a small chin graze, but he's healing beautifully and thriving in rehab! A huge thanks to his finder Naomi and to our Rescue Network Volunteer Nora D. for her help in transporting this spirited little guy. Meet Noctiluca, a female grey seal, who was rescued from Loftus Hall, Co. Wexford on the 6th of October 2024. Noctiluca was 6-8 weeks old and had moulted her lanugo coat. At this stage she would have been learning to hunt and survive by herself. Noctiluca had gotten into difficulty in stormy weather leading her to be found injured with multiple wounds across her body, very underweight and lethargic. She came into the SRI centre weighing only 12kgs and had deep wounds all over her body, particularly on her front flippers. Noctiluca was given medication, wound care and nutrient-rich fish soup. She is still on the road to healing her wounds but has now started on fish school! A massive thank you to her finder Niamh and to our Rescue Network volunteer Lisa D for lift and transport! Furbellow is a female grey seal found by Tiffany C on Ballytrent Beach, Co. Wexford, on October 7th. During her intake exam Furbellow weighed in at just 15.2 kg, underweight for her age of about 2-4 weeks. She also arrived into our care with mouth ulcers. Now, she's happily playing in the pools with her new pals as she gains strength. Thank you, Kata, for rescuing and transporting her to us! Coral Weed, is a female pup who was discovered by Agnieszka H at Hanging Rock Beach, Arklow, Co. Wicklow, on October 10th. She was visibly underweight and had injuries near her mouth and ear. She's been making great strides in the pools, where she's practising her hunting skills and gaining those much-needed pounds. Thanks so much to Paul G. for bringing Coral into our care! #greyseal #marinemammals #marineconservation
