🌍 𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼𝘀! The EAZA Pelecaniformes, Ciconiiformes, and Phoenicopteriformes Taxon Advisory Group has published it Regional Species Plan (RSP) for Ciconiiformes and Phoenicopteriformes. 🦩 The RSP summarises the decisions made related to the roles and goals of priority species recommended as EAZA Ex situ Programmes (EEPs). 💬 After discussing 45 species, experts from the zoo community and the field recommended to establish 21 EEPs. Four of them will coordinate multiple species. Discover 3 Endangered species that have been recommended as EEPs in the pictures below. 🔎 Their roles include insurance population, research on breeding biology, fundraising for capacity building and in situ projects or education about threatened wetlands. 👏Congrats to all involved in this work*! ➡️ RSPs are available for everyone working at an EAZA Member institution on our Member Area: https://loom.ly/fQaw_Vg ---------------------------- 📷 © 2 Лариса Артемьева: Malagasy sacred ibis (Threskiornis bernieri); 3 Aie Ling : Malagasy pond heron (Ardeola idae); 4 Matthew Kwan: Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana) * Including experts from Zoo de Lagos, Zagreb Zoo, Alpenzoo Innsbruck, GaiaZOO, Dvur Kralove Safaripark, Blackpool Zoo, Weltvogelpark Walsrode, Zoo Zürich, Leipzig Zoo, Cotswold Wildlife Park, ALPZA_LATAM, IUCN Species Survival Commission Stork, Ibis and Spoonbill Specialist Group, and Heron Specialist Group #EEP #conservation #education #research #ZooWork #SavingSpeciesTogether

🙌 EAZA supports BirdLife Europe and Central Asia's #BanLeadNow campaign! Did you know it's not just birds, but also our children's and pets' health that is at risk? 📢 Non-toxic alternatives exist! Sign the petition below to drive change now for a safer Europe. ⬇️ And stay tuned for a full article on the topic in the next Zooquaria coming out in the next few days. #SavingSpeciesTogether
🔴 Lead is poison. Ban it NOW! Sign our petition 👉 https://lnkd.in/drGXkqY6 Despite being banned in petrol, paint, and pipes, over 44,000 tonnes of lead are still released into the EU environment each year from hunting, shooting, and fishing. This must stop! Lead exposure harms human health, especially children, poisons animals, and contaminates our ecosystems. Every year: - 1 million kids in Europe are at risk from lead in game meat. - 1 million #birds die from lead poisoning. - 38,000 tonnes of lead shot pellets poison nature: ingesting just one can kill a bird. - Lead fragments in bullets and lost fishing tackle poisons soil and water, impacting ecosystems. - Pets and livestock risk lead exposure too. Support is growing for non-toxic ammunition and fishing weights, and the EU has a unique opportunity to drive this change. Safe alternatives exist for people, wildlife, and the environment. 📢 Sign the petition to #BanLeadNow and protect our communities and nature!

The EAZA Small Mammal Regional Species Plan (RSP) for Chiroptera, Afrotheria, Scandentia and Eulipotyphla has been published. It summarises the decisions made related to the roles and goals of priority species recommended as EAZA Ex situ Programmes (EEPs). 💬 After discussing 56 species, experts from the zoo community and the field recommended to establish three EEPs: for Aardvark, Livingstone's fruit bat, and a combined EEP for Rodrigues and Mauritius fruit bat. The Taxon Advisory Group recommends that EEP participants: 👛 carry out fundraising activities to support field / in-range research and conservation work. For instance for The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, 💉 send blood, tissue and/or serum samples to the EAZA Biobank. 👏Congrats to all involved in this work*! ➡️ RSPs are available for everyone working at an EAZA Member institution on our Member Area: https://loom.ly/fQaw_Vg ---------------------------- 📷 © 2 Chester Zoo: aardvark (Orycteropus afer); 3 Georgia Dicks: Livingstone’s fruit bat (Pteropus livingstonii); 4 Jacques de Speville: Rodrigues fruit bats (Pteropus rodricensis) * Including experts from Jihlava Zoo, Liberec Zoo, Leipzig Zoo, Zagreb Zoo, Chester Zoo, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust / Jersey Zoo, Burger's Zoo, Zoo Plzen, Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) / Mandai Nature, Bristol Zoological Society, Bat Conservation International, Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, Lubee Bat Conservancy and the IUCN Species Survival Commission Specialist Groups #smallmammal #EEP #conservation #education #research #SavingSpeciesTogether

🌎 𝗕𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗔𝗭𝗔 𝗘𝘅 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲! Last week, Banham Zoo sent an Amur tiger to Zoo de La Palmyre thanks to transport experts from SIANE - SOCIETE D'INTERVENTION ANIMALIERE.🤝 That's a great example of how EAZA Members collaborate to keep the animal populations in our care demographically stable and genetically diverse. We welcome this double success 🥳 as Brexit has made animal transfers between EU and UK zoos much more complex, costly and time consuming. 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 Animal exchanges in EEPs are crucial for maintaining healthy populations with good genetic diversity. 💪 Therefore, EAZA and British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) have been working with decisionmakers to resolve the formal hurdles introduced by the new border. 🎤 We also continue advocating for the ultimate long-term solution: a closer alignment between the veterinary rules of the UK and EU.
