I had the great pleasure of speaking about sustainability to businesses in Balbriggan today at an event organised by Fingal Chamber, as part of Climate Action Week. My message was to demonstrate actionable sustainability initiatives all businesses can take - and that the most important thing is just to get started and take that first step on the journey, even if that is baselining your existing energy usage and carbon footprint. A live poll conducted at the end identified that energy efficiency is a high priority for businesses; that their sustainability journey is driven by internal corporate values and cost-savings; that businesses need access to financial incentives and sustainability expertise; that businesses asks of Fingal LEO is for support, advice and grants. Businesses can avail of energy efficiency grants and "Green Start" grants from their local LEO to take these first steps towards a more sustainable future. As a fractional CSO at the Agile Executives, I work with organisations on their sustainability strategies, education, data acquisition & automation, carbon management, compliance (CSRD/CSDDD) and external sustainability certification. Agile Executives are on the green panels at many Local Enterprise Offices as a delivery partner. Have you ever considered your digital carbon footprint and how to improve IT hygiene? Did you know that using your camera during a video call increases its footprint by 96%? However a video call instead of travelling to the meeting could use just 7% of the emissions. The biggest impacts are from Tiktok or streaming hi-def online channels and the least impactful is sending a WhatsApp. Mike Berners-Lee calculated that the average business user generates around 135kg of CO2 per year just by sending emails. That's the equivalent of driving 200 miles in a family car. Multiply that by everyone in your organisation and how many kg could you save with better policies? Top tips to reduce impact: * Use links not attachments * Don't send thank you emails * Don't cc multiple people or keep them needlessly copied for long threads * Unsubscribe from newsletters you don't read * Delete emails to avoid 'zombie emissions' from storing unwanted emails * Avoid unnecessary online meetings or schedule shorter ones. Switch off cameras if not actively participating 'Clean searching' rates Ecosia as the greenest search engine. Contrast this with 'dirty browsing' as pornography accounts for one third of all video streaming generating as much CO2 as Belgium in a year. Could your organisation introduce greener IT habits? It’s amusing because it’s true, but it also underscores a significant challenge in our sustainability efforts. 🌍 𝐒𝐨, 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐭? 1.𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: •𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧: Departments may not grasp the importance of sustainability data and its impact on company goals. •𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Provide regular training and workshops to highlight the significance of sustainability data and its contribution to organizational mission. 2. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: •𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧: Data is stored in varying formats and systems, complicating consolidation and analysis. •𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Implement integrated data systems and promote standardized formats across departments for easier integration. 3. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬: •𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧: Teams may be understaffed or lack resources to compile and share data efficiently. •𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Ensure adequate resourcing and explore automated tools to streamline data collection and reporting. 4. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬: •𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧:Departments may prioritize core functions over sustainability data collection, leading to delays. •𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Align sustainability goals with company objectives and emphasize the business benefits of timely and accurate reporting. 5. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐚𝐩𝐬: •𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧: Lack of clear communication channels can lead to misunderstandings and delays in data provision. •𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Set up clear communication protocols and regular check-ins. Use collaborative platforms to keep everyone informed on data needs and deadlines. 6. 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: •𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧: Sustainability data reporting is not always included in the formal responsibilities of data holders. •𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Incorporate sustainability data reporting into job descriptions and hold data providers accountable for timely and accurate reporting. By tackling these challenges, we can enhance the efficiency of our sustainability data collection and drive our efforts to save the planet.
