Sustainability in Agriculture: the Science and Evidence The Teagasc Sustainability in Agriculture: the Science and Evidence conference took place yesterday Tuesday, 5th November, at the Teagasc Research Centre at Ashtown, Dublin. At the conference the science and evidence behind the sustainability credentials of agriculture, specifically focussing on livestock systems, were put forward. Speaking at the opening of the conference, Teagasc Director, Professor Frank OMara said: “Sustainability is often just viewed through the lens of the environment. Today we also look into indicators of social sustainability on Irish farms, and the economic viability of Irish farming production systems. Different systems have different strengths and challenges, and for any system, we must seek to strengthen the positives and minimise the challenges. In this conference, we are assessing the current sustainability of our milk and beef systems and looking at the pathways that can be followed to improve many of the important metrics.” Invited international speaker, Dr Badi Besbes from the FAO Animal Production and Health Division, opened the scientific papers at the conference with a keynote talk on the challenges and opportunities of sustainable food systems from a global perspective. He provided some of his insights and reflections on the important role animals play in global food production systems. Dr Karen Daly, Acting Head of the Teagasc Environment and Land Use Research Centre in Johnstown Castle said: “Leading national experts are presenting the science and evidence behind sustainability in an Irish context. We will hear about the carbon footprint of Irish livestock systems and the nutritional adequacy of healthy sustainable diets.” You can read more about the event and access the full proceedings at the link below https://lnkd.in/dv56ssjX

Minister Hackett launches Teagasc-led project to help safeguard the future of Ireland’s ash trees An exciting new forestry research project, AshforFuture, aimed at preserving and reviving ash trees in Ireland, was officially launched by Minister of State Pippa Hackett at its kick-off meeting at Teagasc, Ashtown Research Centre, Dublin today, November 1, 2024. The project, led by Teagasc and funded through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs (DAERA) in Northern Ireland, brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts from across Ireland and Europe. You can read the full details of this important project at the link below. Minister of State with responsibility for forestry, Senator Pippa Hackett, opening the event, emphasised the importance of the project in addressing the significant challenges posed by ash dieback disease, a threat that has devastated ash populations across the island for over a decade. Sustainability performance of Irish farms in 2023 revealed Teagasc has released its latest sustainability report focusing on the year 2023 in a report earlier this week. The report derives farm performance indicators from the Teagasc National Farm Survey (NFS) to track the progress of Irish dairy, cattle, sheep and tillage farms in improving their economic, environmental and social sustainability. The report provides indicators for 2023 and earlier years. Lead author of the report, Dr Cathal Buckley, Teagasc Rural Economy and Development Programme noted; “The value of tracking sustainability metrics over an extended period is demonstrated in the latest report. Having achieved high levels of economic performance in 2022, the average dairy and tillage farm reported a substantially lower level of economic performance (income per hectare and labour unit, and economic viability) in 2023. This income volatility was due to output price movements and weather related effects on production levels and production costs.” However, dairy and tillage farm systems still outperformed the drystock farm systems in economic terms in 2023.
